Why the Giraffe has a long neck
By Abigail Richardson
Long ago, in the land of Tinga Tinga, there was a small , friendly giraffe with an everlasting wide grin on his face who lived in the grassland. He lived there with his friends: TickBird, Elephant, Lion, Owl, Tortoise and Hippo. As the bright sun shone over the beautiful plains, the animals drank fresh coconut milk.
All except Giraffe, who was sitting alone, gazing up at the trees wishing he could reach them without a ladder. His short neck meant couldn't get to the juicy leaves and eat them but Giraffe knew he couldn't help having a short neck. On the outside he was upset; on the in side he was strong.
The next day, Giraffe carried his ladder over to the thin, brown tree. The ladder- tall and rusty- stretched up to the sky like a bean stalk. The Giraffe (who was like no other) climbed up to greet his lunch. "Ooo! Nice leaves for my tummy!" he exclaimed. Suddenly the ladder fell over with a clunk. Clinging on with his teeth, Giraffe got Tickbird's attention, "Wait there!" t weeted Tickbird, "I'll go get some help!"
Once Tickbird arrived, Giraffe had become very tired. " Don't worry, I've brought some friends of mine!" cried Tickbird. "Oh please hurry..." mumbled Giraffe. Grabbing on to Giraffe's feet, the small, multicoloured Tickbird yelled out orders. "Let go! We'll catch you!" Giraffe trembled. "No! I... I can't!" Elephant remarked, "Well your going to have to!" Soon Giraffe finally managed to let go- but he got stuck in the branch below him. "Oh dear, we're going to have to pull you out!" Exclaimed Tickbird.
Tickbird, who was glad to help, flew up the tree to tried to untangle the vines holding Giraffe's head. "Everyone, pull!" she shouted. Just then, Giraffe's neck got longer, and longer and longer! Soon Giraffe's feet reached the ground! "Oh! What's happened to me?" Giraffe asked, alarmed. Confused and worried, Tickbird dived down to see what all the commotion was about. "Giraffe, your neck has grown!" "No Tickbird, we've stretched his neck!" pointed out Tortoise. 3 minutes later, Tickbird finally finished pecking away at the vines. Giraffe sprinted away, excited to admire his neck. When Giraffe had reached the water hole, he gasped. In his reflection, there stood a giraffe with a long neck. He felt like the happiest animal on Earth.
As he showed all of the other animals his new neck, they stared contently at him. "All thanks to Tickbird and her friends!" He announced proudly. "Now I can reach the leaves in the trees." Giraffe was very happy now that he could reach high heights.
And that's why the Giraffe as a long neck!
