Why lion has a mane
Long ago, in the land of Tinga Tinga, there was a roaring, wild Lion with a huge, round jaw strolling in the burning sun. He lived there happily with every other animal on the beautiful, sunny grassland, including: Chameleon, Hippo, Tick-bird, Tortoise and Elephant. While the heat of the sun rose, the birds tweeted a sweet tune.
All except Lion, who was rolling around in the soft, thick grass, trying to get to sleep. Lion, who was completely bald, could never get to sleep. He was annoyed with his skin as it was covered in bites and was terribly sun burnt; this bothered him a lot as he stayed up all night scratching and fidgeting. All the animals wanted to desperately help him!
"What's wrong?" Elephant asked. Lion was too sad to answer. "I can help you," Chameleon called. "I'm fine, thank you," he sighed." I must get some sleep now." This time he gave a huge sigh and strolled off to the next tree meanwhile Elephant and Chameleon whispered to each other, "I have an idea!" One of them screeched. "Great, let's help him!" And they discussed the plan of helping Lion.
Elephant and Chameleon plodded away, on their journey to find the sticky milk. Whilst Hippo (and of course Tick-bird) lay in the sun, Tortoise strutted up to them, "Where's Elephant and Chameleon?" He questioned. "Who knows," replied Hippo as she turned to face Tortoise. Just at that moment, Elephant and Chameleon came skipping back with a jar of sticky milk. "I've got it, I've got it!" shouted Elephant. "You've got what?" Tortoise yelled, but he was too late...Elephant and Chameleon were already rubbing it all over Lion's face.
"Will it work?" wondered Elephant as he tripped and fell on lion's tail. In a flash, Lion sprinted through a bush and ran across the field. As he was running, he ran into a huge, hairy bush. When he came out he had big bushy hair covering his head. "It worked!" Shouted Chameleon excitedly. "Yeeeeeyyyyyy!" All the animals said.
Once Lion had realised, he sat in the sun stroking his hair and he was as happy as could be! "Thank you so much Elephant and Chameleon,"he said smiling. "You're very welcome," they replied. "Now I'll never get sun burnt again," he said.
And that's why Lion has a mane!!!
