YALE WOMEN’S RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

Welcome Message Coach Wilson As Head Coach of Yale Women’s Rugby Football Club, I would like to welcome you to our family. YWRFC was established in 1978 and the program has continued to go from strength to strength. It is my mission to ensure that the great traditions of the club are harnessed, whilst providing each member of the squad the opportunity to develop technically, tactically, physically and socially. My rugby background has seen me both play and coach internationally around the world, providing rich professional and cultural experiences. I use my experiences to ensure that my coaching methods are innovative and safe. My thirst for personal professional development also ensures that I am applying upto-date coaching practices that allow the players and the program to positively evolve. As a coach, ensuring that the environment is fun, challenging, social and safe is highly important. As many players that join the program are new to rugby, my priority is to teach the safest techniques and best practices. I use my extensive coaching experience to work with each individual player to ensure they are playing in a safe and controlled manner. At YWRFC there is a place for everyone, whether a player wishes to progress to elite honors or those looking to play socially and make new friends. Rugby is the ultimate sport where each individual is valued and is an integral part of the team. My favorite aspect of YWRFC is the diversity amongst team members and how each member brings a unique perspective to the club. Welcome to the family,

Craig Wilson Head Coach Yale Women’s Rugby Football Club

The Growth of Women’s Rugby There are over 2 million women playing rugby around the world. USA boasts 350,000 pre-college players and an additional 7,000 college players. Rugby 7s was played at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where USA finished 5th. Women’s rugby has seen a huge surge in playing numbers as it offers women the chance to play a full contact sport where the rules are exactly the same as the men’s game. However, rugby is not purely about running into people, it’s a game that requires strategy, athleticism and team work.

Rugby Development Our philosophy at YWRFC is to ensure that each player fulfills their potential. We achieve this by detailed session planning, identifying clear roles and responsibilities, goalsetting, in-depth individual and player analysis, individual and team statistics, position-specific skill development and regular monitoring and feedback. Additionally, technical and tactical development is supplemented by a periodized strength and conditioning program.

Strength and Conditioning The game requires a player to develop their strength, power, cardiovascular and anaerobic capacity. Following a training program will not only promote overall well-being and empowerment, it is also a great way of managing stress levels throughout the year. At YWRFC, each player receives a personalized training program and the opportunity to train in the world class varsity gym with professional strength and conditioning coaches.

Commitment Level At YWRFC, we are aware that you will have many other Yale commitments. Sessions are planned in detail to ensure that you will improve your rugby skill level and physical fitness efficiently. During key academic periods, rugby commitments decrease to allow players to fully focus on their studies. The fall season is played between September and early November. Indoor winter training takes place during January to March. The spring season is played in March and April.

Opposition In the fall, YWRFC plays in the 15-a-side Ivy League Championship. As an athlete, the opportunity to visit and compete against other Ivy League colleges is an exciting prospect. The team plays 7s in the spring. YWRFC hosts our own tournament and we also play against other colleges around the region.

More Than Just Playing Rugby is traditionally a very social sport. At YWRFC, we pride ourselves on our interaction with team mates and opposition. The team regularly holds YWRFC socials and other socials in conjunction with other sporting teams at Yale. These events are fun and bonds and friendships are made for life.

Mentoring Program and Rugby Weekend Rugby Weekend is an annual event where YWRFC alumni, friends and parents come together to celebrate the program in conjunction with the men’s team. However, the weekend is not just about playing rugby! The board provides valuable direction for the undergraduate students, including help with resume completion and interview preparation. Each year, students are given the opportunity to gain advice and network with any of the alumni. In the summer of 2016, there are four players taking up internships both at home and abroad, with one 2016 graduate student gaining full employment after completing an internship in the summer of 2015.
