Step By Step By Stephen Harrison Family Church
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 2 Peter 1:58 NIV Faith is essential in a relationship with God. We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and stand firm in the faith (1 Corinthians 16:13). Faith pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). Peter said he and the readers of 2 Peter received their faith by the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ (1:1). When Peter says to
“add to your faith” in verse 4, he isn’t saying to add works for the means of salvation. He’s saying out of the foundation of your faith should flow Godly character. He gives quite a checklist of seven traits that are dependent upon the one that preceded them and all dependent upon faith that comes from God. Peter is communicating a growing faith that produces Christ-like qualities. The list includes goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love. Now, this isn’t a list of rules or regulations. Peter doesn’t want us to use our abilities and resources to become like Christ. He starts with faith because he knows you must first release control to the Holy Spirit and rely on Him to transform you step by step. I think this is what Paul meant when he said, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
In verse 3, Peter noted when we believed in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, God also “granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness”. We have the potential to grow in Christ not by what we know or have but because of the Holy Spirit who resides in us. But the Christian motto isn’t just “let go and let God.” It all comes from Him but you won’t grow spiritually if you don’t deliberately work at it. Growing in these qualities doesn’t automatically happen after salvation. Like Spurgeon said, “God sends every bird his food but He doesn’t throw it into the nest.” That’s why he says we must “make every effort” and “add to”. These qualities don’t come from our human resources but from the “unfathomable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8). Spiritual growth requires God’s foundational resources and our responsibility of not only knowing Him but growing in Him by doing what His Word says. We are to grow in these qualities, Peter reminds us, so we are
not unproductive and ineffective as believers. Peter isn’t reminding us of these qualities so we grow in our business life, human goals, and physical achievements. The goal is to grow as a believer in His will. One of the Scriptures consistently taken out of context in the Bible is Philippians 4:13. It says, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” I hear athletes quote this verse all the time but has nothing to do with sporting events or scoring touchdowns. Just because you quote this verse doesn’t mean you can dunk a basketball or throw a 40 yard touchdown pass. The qualities of 2 Peter 1:5-8 and the “all things” in Philippians 4:13 pertain to the will of God and growing as a believer. God desire you to grow in your faith as a believer to be productive and effective in what He says life is about – giving glory to God, winning souls for Christ, making disciples of Him, and loving people with His love.
