One of the biggest trends on television, in movies, and with retailers has been what many call the Zombie Apocalypse. This idea mixes two parts horror movie with one part doomsday to come up with an intriguing concept. “The Walking Dead” is one of the most popular programs on television today, and it chronicles the lives of a group of people who are trying to survive the Zombie Apocalypse. All around them the dead have risen with only the intent to kill living things. But the zombies are not the only thing to be afraid of, rival factions, marauders, and lack of basic needs also threaten the lives of the survivors. Hit movies like last summer’s blockbuster “World War Z” tell a similar story.
Even reality TV has taken the bait, airing shows like “Doomsday Preppers”. It seems everywhere we look there are people fascinated by the end of the world. And what is even more strange is that I, a man who hates scary movies, seem to be so drawn in by all of this. I love “The Walking Dead” and look forward to it every week. I catch myself thinking about what I would do if the end of days were to come, wondering how I would react. Now, I haven’t started stockpiling just yet, but still the ideas creep into my mind. But then I begin to question why this is all so popular right now? Why zombies? Why the end of the world? I think it is because we live in a scary and uncertain world. Within the last 15 years our nation has been attacked by terrorists,
our economy has crumbled, our housing market fell through the floor. Many lost their jobs, their retirements, their livelihoods. We are scared. But watching zombies helps us to realize that things could always be worse, at least we aren’t being chased by the undead. But is that really a way to move on from our fear? Fear seems to dictate so much of what we do. So much of our behavior is based on avoiding, running away, or directly dealing with things we are afraid of. But when we are acting out of fear, we aren’t making our best decisions, thinking clearly, or focusing on building the Kingdom of God. I think that is why Jesus spent so much time telling us not to be afraid. One of my favorite stories comes from Matthew 8:23-
27, as Jesus calms the storm that was threatening to destroy their boat, Jesus asks his Disciples, “ “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” ” What a valuable question that Jesus asks us today. Why are we so afraid. The God of all creation, the Almighty God stands with us. We are Children of the Living God. Why are we afraid? The world may be a scary place but our God is bigger than our fears. So let us be a people of faith, not a people of fear today. Our God is big enough. Even bigger than zombies.
