13th Annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival Information Letter Welcome to Swimming 2017 The Lakes College annual Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 3 February 2017. As well as being our inter-house carnival, this event is also used as a selection process for students who will represent The Lakes College at the District swimming carnival to be held at Lawnton Swimming Pool on Wednesday 15 February. This year we are using The Lawnton Aquatics Centre to align with both the District and Regional swim meets. Please be advised that the venue is a 50m outdoor pool. While not competing and when marshalling for events students will be seated under shade shelters in the grandstand, though will swim in the unshaded pool. We recommend students are sun safe at all times and remain well hydrated throughout the day. As always, the carnival is based wholly on participation and enjoyment, with an expectation that all students compete for their house. For our carnival this year the events will be in two categories, Championship and Participation events, all of which will cover the four major strokes (except there will be no 25m Butterfly). Championship events will be 50m in length and students who compete in these events will be eligible for the District Swimming Carnival and Age Championship. For all non- champion events, students will earn points for their house.
Formalities Venue – Lawnton Aquatic Centre, Corner Gympie and Lawnton Pocket Roads, Lawnton Transport – All students will travel to and from the carnival by bus. Parents are able to take their students home from Lawnton Aquatic Centre after the carnival has finished, but must sign their child out with the student’s Pastoral Care teacher.

(However, the pool has asked that we refrain from wearing Streamers, Hawaiian Skirts or streamer wigs in the pool.)
College sport shoes are to be worn to and from the venue. Thongs may be worn when marshalling for events only. College sports hat must be worn at all times, when not competing. Water stations will be available but all students are to bring water bottles.
Canteen There are canteen facilities at the Lawnton Aquatic Centre, which parents and students may access; however, we recommend students bring lunch and water.
Program The start time for Event 1 is 9:15am. All events will start with the youngest age group and increase in age. Girls will precede boys and in the case where an age group event is not filled, it will combine with the next race to ensure all races and lanes are full. The carnival will conclude with the presentation of age champions and the House Cup at 2:15pm. The Program of Events has been sent to all families in 2017 and some copies will be available on the day. Nominations Primary students will nominate during Friday sport rotations in Week 1. Secondary students will nominate in House meetings during Week 1 of term for all 50m events. If no nomination is received from a student, by default, the student will be entered into the 25m Freestyle (all students must swim either 50m or 25m freestyle). Only students swimming in the championship (50m events) will be eligible for Age Champion. No nomination is required for 25m events. Training Students who successfully qualify to represent the college at the district swimming carnival must be involved in the TLC swim training squad. Training for the swimming squad will be on 6, 8, 10 and 13 February, in the lead up to the District Swimming Carnival. Whilst many students will have their own club swim squad training commitments, all members of the team are expected to be a part of the college training squad. If your student is already part of club swimming squad program please contact the Director of Sport to discuss TLC Swim Club training requirements. (

Parent and Spectator At The Lakes College, we strive to provide a fair, positive and encouraging environment for students to compete. The goal of all carnivals at TLC is to foster a life-long positive affinity for physical activity. While our carnivals have a competitive element, we must remind our students to have fun and practise good sportsmanship. We thank all parents and spectators for your understanding and for modelling positive behaviours to your children, as well as to every child.
