FIGHTING MOTHER NATURE A�er back-to-back rainouts, the Southern Connecticut State University Baseball team opens the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they host cross-town rival New Haven. SCSU defeated New Haven 8-2 in City Series play in the fall. LAST TIME OUT Junior centerfielder Karl Derbacher and senior designated hi�er Anthony Fiorillo each went 3-for-5 with two runs ba�ed in on Monday to lead SCSU to a 7-3, neutral-site, non-conference victory over St. Anselm at Southard Stadium. Melvin Perdue hit 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs for St. Anselm. SCOUTING THE CHARGERS Picked to finish fourth in the East Coast Conference (ECC), New Haven has opened the season on a six-game losing streak. Most recently, the Chargers were swept, 5-0 and 10-3, in a doubleheader by No. 15 nationally ranked West Chester. Jimmy Rivas went 4-for-5 for New Haven in the twinbill. PREVIOUSLY AGAINST NEW HAVEN The Owls used a seven-run eighth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 9-3 lead as SCSU went on to a 9-5 victory over the Chargers in Ormond Beach, Fla. on March 19, 2006. Joe Pagan went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored for SCSU. Ken Appel hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs for New Haven.

EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE The SCSU offense scored its most runs in nearly a year on March 2 when the Owls defeated Assumption 17-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. In all, 11 Owls recorded at least one base hit and 10 SCSU players scored at least one run. The last time the Owls scored 17 runs was in a 17-11 victory over Dominican on March 4, 2007. The last time SCSU scored more runs was April 4, 2002, when they tallied an 18-7 victory at Merrimack.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING A�er opening the season by ge�ing swept at Florida Institute of Technology, the Owls have run off a five-game winning streak since the calendar flipped to March. Over that span, SCSU has outscored its opponents 43-8, including a pair of shutouts. The last time the Owls won five in a row was April 13-19, 2007. The last time SCSU posted a longer winning streak was March 8-20, 2006, when the club posted eight consecutive victories.
OWLS ON THE HONOR ROLL Sophomore pitcher Ed Bethke, junior shortstop Mike Diaz and senior designated hi�er Anthony Fiorillo were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll for the week ending on March 2. The Owls have had five honor roll selections so far this season.
HELP FROM THE HILL A�er giving up double-digit run totals in each of the season’s first three games, the SCSU pitching staff has not allowed more than three runs in a game in the five contests since. Included in that span are back-to-back shutouts of C.W. Post and Assumption. Against C.W. ENJOYING THE WARM WEATHER Junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman saw success as the Owls opened their season with three games at Florida Tech on Feb. 16 and 17. The West Haven, Conn. native hit 8-for-13 (.615) with five RBI, a double, a run scored and a stolen base on the trip.
STRONG ARMS AT THE TOP The Owls return a bevy of experienced pitchers this spring. Seniors Toby Nylin and Nick Carlucci both have logged significant time as starters, while junior Justin Cox is back on the hill a�er missing all of last year with an injury. He was an All-Conference pick two years ago a�er going 7-0 for the Owls. Also back in sophomore le�y Ed Bethke, who led DIAZ EARNS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS the staff in innings pitched last year en route to a Junior shortstop Mike Diaz has been named a five-win season. The bullpen will be anchored by Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball junior Mike Connors, who was second on the club Magazine. He garnered All-Northeast Region and in appearances last season. First-Team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors a year ago a�er ba�ing .360. FLIRTING WITH A FINE FIGURE In addition to Mike Diaz, who hit .360 last year, the 2008 NORTHEAST-10 Owls have two other returnees who have posted PRESEASON COACHES POLL single-season efforts above .300. IN THE NE-10 PRESEASON POLL The Owls were tabbed for fi�h in this year’s Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. Franklin Pierce was selected as the preseason favorite. HEAD COACH TIM SHEA Affiliated with Southern Connecticut State University as a student-athlete, instructor and coach for two decades, Tim Shea’s long-standing relationship with the university has been a tremendously successful one. He took over as head baseball coach prior to the 2002 season a�er serving 11 years as an Owls assistant to Joe Bandiera. Now in his seventh season, Shea has compiled a 172-121 (.587) record. He guided the Owls to the NCAA Division II World Series in 2005. ON DECK The Owls return to the field over spring break when they make a trip to Florida for 10 games, including eight contests against fellow Northeast Region teams. SCSU opens the spring trip with a doubleheader against Mercy on March 14. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
