Minor receives euthanasia for the first time in Belgium
A minor passed away at the weekend in Belgium's first case of death by euthanasia of an under-18-year-old, writes Het Nieuwsblad. The death comes two and a half years after parliament voted in favour of extending euthanasia to terminally ill minors who are capable of making the decision. The minor was suffering from a terminal illness and the request for euthanasia was filed in Dutch, suggesting that it was carried out in Flanders, according to professor Wim Distelmans, chairman of the federal control and evaluation commission for euthanasia. No other details about the case were communicated to the press. Belgium is the only country in the world where euthanasia is available to minors, despite fierce criticism from home and abroad. At our 6:33 last Sunday we were reminded that Jesus said ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’ Indeed we all need to be carriers of that light, salt of this earth, as we live out our daily lives here in Belgium at this time!

Saturday 1st October The Protestant Social Centre invites you to its Family Day between 13.00 and 17.00. Fun activities for all ages! Admission 5 EUR. At their premises Rue Cans 12, 1050 Ixelles. Wednesday 5th October Taize Service in St Jan’s Church Tervuren, 7.30pm. Everyone welcome. 9th October William Tyndale Service & Museum visit Please come along with Simon Tyndall as we mark the anniversary of the great English Bible Translator in Vilvoorde. In this part of Belgium we live very near the spot where Tyndale was martyred in 1536! The Wm Tyndale-Silo church are holding a Commemorative Service at 3.30pm on Sunday 9th October and the Rev Edwin Delen has invited us to join him and his congregation for this special event, which will be in Dutch & English. There will be refreshments afterwards and also a time to visit the church’s museum dedicated to the memory of Wm Tyndale. Do come and join me as we represent St Paul’s at this service!
