6th Grade Newsletter P.S. 188 The Island School
We have had a wonderful start of the new school year! Our successful start is in large part due to the infectious and joyous attitude of the students, and your help getting the students to school on time and ready to work everyday. I am constantly impressed by the type of students we have the privilege of working with daily. Students are actively engaged, eager to participate and they have a strong work ethic. September was a busy month here at PS/MS 188. All students were given the First round of the Ed-‐ Performance Assessment in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The Ed-‐Performance Assessments are unique because they are adaptive; adjusting each question to the individual student, depending on their success with the previous question. These assessments are tools for teachers and parents, used to identify areas of strength and weakness for each subject area and to set goals accordingly. We will gladly share your child’s score with you during our 2nd Parent Teacher Conferences in November. Please fell free to contact the 6th grade teachers via email with any questions or concerns. What is happening in Math?
Our 6th graders have been busy studying and learning the concepts and language of ratios and using it to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, "The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” This month students will also continue to apply and extend previous understandings of tape diagrams and how to use them to solve ratio word problems. In Class and as part of their daily homework, students are using IXL, an online Math Program, to enhance their math skills.
What is happening in Humani/es?
In Humani)es this month student will finish their story telling essay on the Trojan War. They will also begin their group project on the Greek Myths. They will work collabora)vely on five elements of the story: characters, seDng, plot, conflict, and theme. Each group will be responsible for presenta)on in front of the classroom. During the second week of the month we will start reading Rick Riordan’s “The Lightening Thief”. There will be a comic book version, a narrator, as well as the movie based on the book. Every Friday we have quiz on vocabulary, and a book report.

P.S. 188 The Island School Hemos tenido un maravilloso inicio del nuevo año escolar! Nuestro comienzo exitoso es en gran parte debido a la actitud contagiosa y alegre de los estudiantes, y su ayuda asegurandose que los estudiantes lleguen a la escuela a tiempo y listos para aprender todos los días. Estoy constantemente impresionada por el tipo de estudiantes que tenemos el privilegio de trabajar todos los días . Los estudiantes participan activamente, con ganas de participar y tienen una fuerte ética de trabajo .Septiembre fue un mes muy ocupado aquí en la escuela PS / MS 188 Todos los estudiantes se les dio la primera vuelta de la Evaluación Ed -‐ Rendimiento en Artes del Lenguaje Inglés y Matemáticas. Las Evaluaciones de Ed -‐ rendimiento son únicas porque son adaptativas; ajustando cada pregunta para cada estudiante , dependiendo de su éxito con la pregunta anterior . Estas evaluaciones son herramientas para los profesores y los padres, que se utiliza para identiFicar las áreas de fortaleza y debilidad de cada materia y establecer metas en consecuencia. Estaremos encantados de compartir la puntuación de su hijo/a con usted durante nuestra segunda Conferencias de Padres y Maestros en noviembre. Por favor, no duden en contactar a los maestros de 6º grado a través de correo electrónico con cualquier pregunta o preocupación. Que está ocurriendo en Matemáticas?
Nuestros alumnos de 6to grado han estado muy ocupados estudiando y aprendiendo los conceptos y el lenguaje de las relaciones y su uso para describir una relación de razon entre dos cantidades. Por ejemplo, "La relación de sus alas a picos en la casa de aves en el zoológico es 2:1, ya que por cada 2 alas había 1 pico." Este mes los estudiantes también continuarán aplicando y ampliando los entendimientos previos de diagramas de cinta y cómo usarlos para solucionar problemas de relación de palabras. En la clase y como parte de su tarea diaria, los estudiantes están utilizando IXL, un programa de matemáticas en la red del internet, para mejorar sus habilidades matemáticas.
Que está ocurriendo en ELA? En Humanidades este mes, los estudiantes terminarán su ensayo la narración de historias sobre la guerra de Troya . También comenzarán su proyecto de grupo en los mitos griegos. Ellos trabajarán en colaboración en cinco elementos de la historia : personajes , escenario, trama, conflicto, y el tema. Cada grupo será responsable de la presentación delante de la clase. Durante la segunda semana del mes vamos a empezar a leer Rick Riordan "The Thief Lightening " . Habrá una versión cómica del libro, un narrador , así como la película basada en el libro . Todos los viernes tenemos concurso en el vocabulario , y un informe de un libro .
