Annual Meeting 2015 Many thanks to everyone that came to our annual meeting in October. We held elections for the three principal roles of the group and committee members. We said a fond thank you to our long standing Coordinator Trevor Parsons who signed off after 8 years, although he assures us he plans to stay very much involved with the ongoing work of the group. We welcomed Jono Kenyon as our new Co-ordinator who is a lifelong Hackney resident. He has considerable campaigning experience, most notably with CyclingWorks London, which saw over 160 London businesses publicly support the new North-South and East-West Cycle Superhighways which will be completed by next summer. The new committee is as follows: Co-ordinator Jono Kenyon Secretary Oliver Schick Treasurer Dave Harris Consultation co-ordinators Natalie Gould and Harry Fletcher-Wood Community outreach co-ordinator Ruth-Anna Macqueen Fundraising co-ordinator Rita Krishna Rides co-ordinator Siobhan Blackshaw Web editors Dave Lukes and Trevor Parsons Workshop representative Chas Wilshere We also had a talk from John Adams, UCL Emeritus Professor of Geography, on ‘Cycling and the politics of road space allocation’. Minutes from the AGM: http://www.hackney-cyclists.org.uk/oct15.pdf One of our major aims over the next year is to reach out to people not currently involved with the campaign, via face to face activities and on social media. If you don’t already, please ‘like’ our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter @hackney_cycling and do get in touch with your suggestions and ideas email [email protected] - we can assure you they will be warmly welcomed.

Space 4 Cycling progress London Fields & Haggerston Wards http://action.space4cycling.org/data/ward/964 Hackney Council has produced a ground-breaking proposal to improve the Middleton Road area and surrounding streets. Hackney Cycling and Hackney Council have long been in favour of reducing through motor traffic by the use of ‘filters’. The council plan to stop outside drivers from rat-running through these residential streets by ‘filtering’ the streets – in this case they propose to introduce large planters filled with flowers and trees (see image) – which will make it impossible to race through the area. The proposals will make it safer for people walking and cycling, and add welcome colour and beauty to our streets. We are very pleased the council are conducting this consultation as an experiment. This means we can see what effects the changes have, and suggest improvements. We prefer seeing the pros and cons for ourselves rather than guessing what they will be, as would be the case for a paper-based proposal. Hackney Cycling Campaign fully supports the council’s proposals. We urge you to show your support by signing the online petition at bit.ly/fumefreestreets

Cycle Superhighway 1 Cycle Superhighway 1 is now well under construction through the borough. The route runs from Wilson Street in the South up to Tottenham. The route will see significant upgrades to many junctions including Old Street and Pitfield Street (see image) as well as a proposed protected cycle track on Balls Pond Road. A further consultation was held by TfL into adding further ‘filters’ in the De Beauvoir North area and Wordsworth road, following a community led petition. We fully support these, and hope to have a positive response shortly.
