  Ball  State  University                                                                                                                                                    Faculty  &  Non-­‐Athletics          Athletics  Compliance  Office                                                                                                    Department  Staff  Members                                         Many  Ball  State  University  faculty  and  staff  members  are  requested  to  assist  in  the  recruitment  efforts  of  prospective   student-­‐athletes   due   to   their   academic   expertise   and   enthusiastic   support   of   the   Athletics   Department.   The   Athletics   Compliance   Office   is   charged   with   ensuring   Ball   State   University   faculty   and   staff   are   aware   of   NCAA   rules   and   regulations  in  order  to  avoid  any  potential  for  inadvertent  institutional  violations.     GENERAL  RESTRICTIONS     On-­‐Campus  Contact   • Faculty   members   may   contact   prospective   student-­‐athletes   on-­‐campus   for   recruiting   purposes   in   all   sports.   Unavoidable  off-­‐campus  contact  is  permissible,  provided  no  discussion  relevant  to  Ball  State  University  Athletics   take  place.     • Recruiting   contacts   on-­‐   or   off-­‐campus   between   a   member   of   the   institution’s   Board   of   Trustees   and   a   prospective  student-­‐athlete  are  not  permissible.     Off-­‐Campus  Contact   • Faculty  and  staff  members  are  prohibited  from  having  off-­‐campus  contact  with  prospective  student-­‐athletes.     Exceptions   o Faculty  members  are  permitted  to  participate  in  entertainment  activities  involving  a  prospective   student-­‐athlete  on  an  Official  Visit  held  at  the  home  of  an  institutional  staff  member.     o Off-­‐campus   recruiting   contacts   made   by   the   Admissions   Office   in   conjunction   with   an   admissions   program   are   permissible,   provided   the   program   is   directed   at   all   prospective   students,   including   non-­‐ athletes.     Recruiting  Materials   • General   Correspondence:   Institutional   staff   members   are   permitted   to   write   prospective   student-­‐athletes   (in   sports   other   than   football).   In   sports   except   men’s   basketball,   institutional   staff   members   may   not   write   prospective  student-­‐athletes  until  September  1  at  the  beginning  of  the  prospective  student-­‐athlete’s  junior  year   in   high   school.   In   the   sport   of   men’s   basketball,   prospective   student-­‐athletes   may   not   receive   general   correspondence   until   the   conclusion   of   their   sophomore   year   in   high   school.   The   content   of   all   general   correspondence   to   prospective   student-­‐athletes   (or   the   prospective   student-­‐athlete’s   parents   or   legal   guardians)  may  only  be  prepared  by  the  head  coach,  or  a  full-­‐time  assistant  coach  in  the  sport  of  football.     • Pre-­‐Enrollment   Information:   Prospective   student-­‐athletes   may   receive   pre-­‐enrollment   information   regarding   orientation   and   academics,   provided   the   prospective   student-­‐athlete   has   signed   a   National   Letter   of   Intent   with   Ball  State  University  or  has  been  officially  accepted  for  enrollment  by  Ball  State  University.     • Non-­‐Athletics   Publications:   Prospective   student-­‐athletes   may   receive   non-­‐athletics   publications   (e.g.,   official   academic,   admissions   and   student   services   publications)   published   by   Ball   State   University   and   available   to   all   students.   Non-­‐athletics   publications   may   be   sent   to   prospective   student-­‐athletes   after   September   1   of   the   prospective   student-­‐athlete’s   junior   year   in   high   school.   Men’s   basketball   prospective   student-­‐athletes   may   receive  non-­‐athletics  publications  at  the  conclusion  of  their  sophomore  year  in  high  school.     • Do   not   send   a   prospective   student-­‐athlete   any   athletics   department   publications   (e.g.,   media   guide,   game   program)  by  mail  or  electronic  mail.   Page  1  of  2

  Telephone  Calls   • The  NCAA  limits  the  number  of  telephone  calls  the  athletics  department  staff  may  place  to  prospective  student-­‐ athletes.   In   all   sports   except   football,   institutional   staff   members   may   make   telephone   calls   to   prospective   student-­‐athletes.   Telephone   calls   made   by   faculty   and   staff   members   are   subject   to   NCAA   limitations.   Institutions   are   limited   to   one   telephone   call   per   prospective   student-­‐athlete   per   week.   Any   telephone   calls   made  to  prospective  student-­‐athletes  must  be  coordinated  with  the  applicable  coaching  staff  members  to  ensure   a  violation  does  not  occur.     • Admissions  Office  staff  members  are  not  bound  by  the  once-­‐per-­‐week  telephone  call  restriction,  provided  they   are  not  calling  at  the  direction  of  or  on  behalf  of  the  athletics  department  and  the  calls  are  made  pursuant  to   the  regular  admissions  program  and  directed  at  all  prospective  students,  including  non-­‐athletes.     Publicity   • Ball   State   University   may   not   publicize   (or   arrange   for   publicity   of)   a   prospective   student-­‐athlete’s   Official   or   Unofficial  Visit  to  campus.     • The   Admissions   Office   is   permitted   to   hang   on   its   bulletin   board   the   name   of   a   prospective   student-­‐athlete   visiting   the   institution,   even   if   the   athletics   department   arranges   the   visit   through   the   Admissions   Office,   provided  the  same  arrangement  is  made  for  all  prospective  students  visiting  Ball  State  University,  including  non-­‐ athletes.
