Personal Best brand guidelines
1.0 Our logo Our logo is the single most important element of our visual identity. As such, it should appear on all of our communications. Whenever possible the Personal Best (PB) black and green version shown below should be used. However, we understand that background colours and production values vary so there needs to be some flexibility in the mark. The overriding rule for which logo version to use is legibility.
Below are examples of how the logo should be used (both in colour and mono) against different coloured backgrounds. Black or dark coloured backgrounds.
PB Green background.
Black and white production values. Black background.
Black and white production values. White background.
The logo should only ever be used as shown. Distorting or altering the master logo in any way is not acceptable. Avoid using the logo on complicated or detailed backgrounds.

1.1 Giving the logo space In order for the logo to have maximum impact it is necessary to ensure there is space around it, an ‘exclusion zone’. This prevents other elements conflicting or detracting from the mark. Below is the minimum area of space that should surround the logo. This is based on the ‘x’ height of the lettering.
1.2 Consistent sizes In order to ensure clarity we recommend the logo is not used smaller than the size suggested below.
Minimum size 25mm

4.0 Tone of voice Personal Best aims to appeal to and motivate people from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. English is not always the reader’s first language. Communication is only successful if the target audience is able to understand and act upon the information. So clarity and directness are the hallmarks of all Personal Best communications. Make your words: Simple To ensure the message is understood and remembered. Use short sentences. Use frequently used words. Don’t use excessively intricate language that not many people know and sentences that ramble on and on and on.
Motivational To encourage people to take action. Write in the active mode. The passive mode sounds far too apologetic. Positive To embrace the spirit of the Personal Best philosophy. Use upbeat language. And express yourself positively. Using words like don’t and can’t and didn’t can sound discouraging. Don’t express yourself negatively.
Friendly So that people are encouraged and not intimidated. Keep your words informal. Always use language that is easily understood. Speaking with one’s audience formally is not terribly sociable. Honest So that readers trust the message. Use direct straightforward sentences. And only necessary words. Basically, to be honest, at the end of the day, beating about the bush
before you get to the point sometimes makes the reader feel they are not being told the truth.
Action-orientated So that people understand exactly what they need to do. Provide enough information for the reader to act. Use this guideline whenever you write a Personal Best communication.
This is a general guideline for use whenever you feel like it. They work in some places and not in others. And on some dates but not on others.

5.0 Photography The aim of Personal Best is to appeal to a wide range of people from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. In order to do this we have utilised two styles of photography which tell different kinds of stories. Our primary photography style is called ‘PB portraits’. PB portraits are images of real people who have graduated through the Personal Best programme. They show people who demonstrate a positive attitude, pride and self-belief. The subjects look directly into the camera. PB portrait shots show people in their own environments – at home and in their communities, neighbourhoods and places of work. These portraits are honest and positive. They never feel too posed or forced. Aim for shots that are rich in detail, giving a glimpse into people’s lives. PB portraits should be used for all high-profile elements (brochure covers, advertising, etc).
Photographic treatment of PB portraits Backgrounds of PB portraits are coloured up using one of the palette colours, emphasising the person whilst retaining a setting and telling story. Any of the palette colours may be used and can be varied, depending on the design treatment required.

5.0 Photography continued Our secondary image style is ‘Reportage’. Reportage shots show Personal Best volunteers working on real projects. They might show sporting or charitable events, training programmes, volunteer work in communities and many other things. Reportage images also show the people who benefit from our projects. These people might be from London’s millions of citizens or hundreds of organisations that benefit from volunteers. Reportage images support the primary photography style (because PB portraits shots won’t tell a complete story in isolation). Wherever possible, use Reportage images in a less high-profile way than PB portrait shots and at a smaller size.

6.0 Stakeholder logo bar Personal Best has been set up as a partnership programme by the London and Skills Council (LSC), Mayor of London, Job Centre Plus, London 2012 and the London Development Agency (LDA). Personal Best is part funded by the European Social Fund. In order to recognise everyone’s participation in the programme, the logos need to be included on all communications. To ensure consistency across all communications, a stakeholder ‘logo bar’ has been created. The order and size of all stakeholder logos is shown on the following page, at both A4 and A5, against a black and white background. The logo bar must not be altered for either A4 or A5 publications. However, for larger formats (i.e. A3 posters), it is acceptable to increase the space between the individual logos to create the correct size of logo bar to suit the specific design. In special circumstances it may be necessary to rearrange the hierarchy of how stakeholder logos appear. None of the logos may be used in any way except as specified in the logo bar. This is particularly true of the 2012 logo which may not be reproduced in any other way. The 2012 logo should never be reproduced without a licence agreement for Personal Best being in place.

7.0 Brand language – motivators Motivational words form a key component of the visual identity. This language is derived from words which include the word ‘be’ and is incorporated on all main graphics such as front covers, posters, exhibition materials etc. Motivators are designed to run vertically up the page and are positioned on the right hand edge of any layouts. The ‘be’ element of the language should always be highlighted, as shown in the examples below. The remainder of the word should be reproduced as white at 60% opacity when on a solid band of colour. The opacity level can vary in situations where the text sits on an image to ensure legibility in every case.

“T hanks to the people I met on the course, I’m learning Spanish and have a new understanding and tolerance of people from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. I’m due to start a volunteer placement with Southwark Council soon and I feel like the sky’s the limit. If I get to volunteer at the 2012 Games it will be a bonus, even if I don’t, the course has given me transferable skills and experiences that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Games-time volunteering – a real life experience! “ I love having fun! Volunteering at Games-time is that and so much more. When I had the chance to volunteer at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin I leapt at it and I wasn’t disappointed. I worked for five weeks in the Olympic Family Transport Services Team providing general information on Games transport and helped to organise transport for arrivals, departures and special events for VIPs. I worked with people of all ages with different backgrounds and experiences and I learned a lot about other cultures. I also got to see some of the amazing sports competition which was a bonus. Without realising it at the time I learned a lot in a really fun way and have since found a job working in transport. Volunteering at the Games was the best thing I’ve ever done and I would totally recommend Games-time volunteering to everyone as an experience of a life-time.”
