Salisbury’s Luke Campbell Honored As Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete Of The Year Mary Washington Freshman Glenn Taylor, Salisbury Coach Jim Jones Also Receive Top Awards YORK, Pa. - Salisbury sophomore Luke Campbell continues to add to his long list of accolades, as he was named the 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year after collecting three gold medals and posting a pair of record-breaking performances at the championship meet. Campbell recorded top individual finishes in the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, setting a new CAC record in the 110 and a new championship meet mark in the 400. He also anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory to grab his third gold of the meet. Campbell, the CAC Rookie of the Year at both the 2013 indoor and outdoor championship meets and the 2014 CAC Indoor Co-Athlete of the Year, is the 10th Salisbury student-athlete to receive Athlete of the Year recognition. Mary Washington freshman Glenn Taylor took first place in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100 to earn 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year accolades. Taylor is the fifth UMW student-athlete to receive the award and first since 2005. Salisbury’s Jim Jones was chosen by his peers as the 2014 CAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year award. It is the third-straight year, and eighth time since 2004, that Jones has received the honor. In addition to Campbell’s superb performance, Salisbury junior Dylan Burkett also took home multiple gold medals for the Sea Gulls. Burkett won the shot put for the second straight year and grabbed top honors in the discus following second-place finishes in the event at the 2012 and 2013 championships. Salisbury totaled 18 All-CAC selections, more than doubling the number of all-conference honorees from any other team. Campbell and Burkett led a contingent of seven Sea Gulls on the All-CAC first team with their multiple individual golds at the championship. The Gulls also claimed top honors in the 4x400 relay that included Campbell and juniors Devon Hopkins, Thomas Burke and Tyler Austin. For the second consecutive year, Austin captured gold in the 100-meter dash and took second in the 200, while Hopkins nabbed second-place marks in the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump, and Burke placed second in the 800. The other Sea Gull landing on the All-CAC first team was Eric Wood in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hopkins, Austin, Burke and Burkett earned second-team All-CAC honors along with junior George Martinez in the 1,500, junior Ryan DiPascale in the shot put, junior Jeff Jordan in the discus, sophomore Xavier Stinson in the high jump and freshman Jason White in the pole vault. Jordan and Stinson are both two-time All-CAC award winners. Christopher Newport, which placed seven individuals and a relay team on the All-CAC squad, was paced by a pair of dual gold-medalists, senior Richard Roethel in the javelin and high jump, and sophomore Dominique Torres in the long jump and triple jump. Junior Robert Mayes captured in the individual title in the 400 meters to secure first-team accolades, while junior Samuel Martin also grabbed All-CAC first team honors in the 1,500. Torres, Mayes, Roethel and Troy Newcomer earned second team honors in the 4x100 relay, while junior Daniel Richard placed second for the Captains in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. With Rookie of the Year Taylor leading the way, Mary Washington placed two athletes on the All-CAC first team and four on the second team. Junior Nick Judy captured first team accolades by winning the pole vault for the second straight year. Eagles earning second team honors included senior Sean Healy in the 5,000 and 10,000 along with freshman Zach Kerns in the 400. Wesley junior Carlton Sheppard captured the individual crown and All-CAC first team accolades in the 800 meters, while the Wolverines’ 4x100 relay squad of freshmen Patrick Schlosser, DaJahn Lowery, Johnny Crenshaw and Markael Jenkins also nabbed first team honors. Schlosser and Sheppard also teamed with freshmen Anthony Brinkley and Evan Le’Mon to post a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Freshman Vidal Adams earned an All-CAC second team nod with a silver-medal placing in the long jump. York senior Tim Hartung, the 2013 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year and the Co-Athlete of the Year at the 2014 Indoor Championships, captured a pair of individual golds to pace the Spartans. Hartung secured a top placing in the 5,000 meters for the third straight year, and won the 10,000 for the second straight year and third time in his career. Also earning All-CAC recognition for the Spartans was sophomore Robert Doster, who grabbed second in the javelin throw.
