Campbell And Hartung Named CAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Co-Athletes of the Year Salisbury’s Zach White And Jim Jones Also Capture Individual Honors YORK, Pa. - York senior Tim Hartung and Salisbury sophomore Luke Campbell continue to add to their CAC trophy collections with 2014 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Co-Athlete of the Year awards after each won two individual events and anchored gold medal relays at the conference championship meet Feb. 22 at Christopher Newport University. Hartung won the 3,000, 5,000 and anchored the Spartans’ winning distance medley relay to pick up his second CAC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year award. In addition to the Indoor Track & Field honor at the first CAC championship in 2012, Hartung has also won a pair of CAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year awards and the 2013 Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year plaque. Campbell matched Hartung’s success last weekend, winning the 60-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash and coming from behind to anchor Salisbury’s 4x400 relay team to victory by just .02 seconds at the wire. Campbell, who placed second in the hurdles in 2013, was the CAC Rookie of the Year at both the 2013 indoor and outdoor championship meets. Campbell got plenty of help in leading Salisbury to its third-straight CAC Indoor Track & Field crown with 160 points, topping second-place Christopher Newport (96) and third-place Wesley (90) for the title. Freshman Zach White was picked as the Rookie of the Year after finishing first in the long jump and second in the triple jump. It’s the third-straight year a Sea Gull won the Rookie of the Year award. Jim Jones also collected more hardware after being named Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year by his peers. Jones won his second-straight Indoor Coach of the Year award and 27th of his career when combining cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field for both SU men’s and women’s teams. Teammates joining Campbell and White on the All-CAC first team are juniors Thomas Burke in the 800, Ryan DiPascale in the shot put and Dylan Burkett in the weight throw. All three were first-team all-stars last year. Burke and Campbell combined with Austin Tyler and Devon Hopkins to capture top honors in the 4x400 relay. Burke successfully defended his title in the 800 while DiPasquale and Burkett defended their throws crowns from 2013. Three Sea Gulls who joined White on the All-CAC second team included Austin in the 60-meter dash as well as juniors Brandon Horning (mile), George Martinez (3,000) and sophomore Xavier Stinson (high jum). Championship meet host Christopher Newport, in its first season as members of the CAC, finished second in the medals race with seven, led by first-team All-CAC honorees senior Richard Roethel in the high jump, juniors Samuel Martin in the mile, Troy Newcomer in the high jump, and sophomore Dominique Torres in the triple jump. Second-team All-CAC award winners for the Captains include Torres in the long jump, senior Christopher Comeau in the pole vault, junior Daulton Teaford in the 200 dash and the distance medley relay squad. Wesley, which posted its best-ever finish in a CAC track & field championship event with third place, collected first-team All-CAC awards in the sprints - freshman Markael Jenkins won the 60-meter dash, and teammate DaJahn Lowery took top honors in the 200. Second-team All-CAC awards were presented to senior Matt Bundy in the 60-meter hurdles, junior Carlton Sheppard in the 400 and freshman Percell Downes in the high jump. Sheppard was also a member of the silver medal 4x400 relay team. Bundy is a three-time CAC all-star in the 60-meter hurdles. In addition to Hartung’s three gold medal performances, freshman Matthew Hayes was honored for his secondplace finish in the 5,000-meter run as YCP swept the top two positions in the race. Mary Washington sophomore Nicholas Judy repeated his 2013 CAC championship performance by winning the pole vault while senior middle distance standout Matt Shaughnessy claimed his third-straight second-team All-CAC certificate in the 800-meter run. Frostburg State sophomore John Lowery collected a pair of silver medals, leading the Bobcats with strong performances in the shot put and weight throw. - 30 -
