Paeroa College “Excellence in Everything” College Comment Friday 27th February 2015
We have just completed a fantastic day of athletics on the field with some outstanding team and individual performances. I understand that breaking news suggests that we have seen some school records broken but at the time of writing I am unable to confirm any details. Seeing our students so engaged and colourful reminded me of just what an awesome group of young people we have in the school. I was also reminded of the commitment of our staff who worked incredibly hard to provide the day. Our next significant celebration is our Maori awards evening tonight. Following a number of hui last year we made the decision that it was important to raise the profile of Maori achievement within the school. Over the last few years, and in line with national trends, our Maori learners have underachieved in comparison with the overall school achievement. Despite this, we have had some outstanding individual performances and we are embracing the opportunity to showcase these role models and encourage all of our Maori learners to achieve to the highest possible standards. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my particular thanks to all of the whanau and school staff who have helped in organising this evening. In terms of upcoming events, the Year 13 PE camp looks like it will be a tremendous occasion. I’m hoping that the weather holds for them during their days on Great Barrier island next week. For everyone else, now is the time to knuckle down and get into their learning. In particular, every Y11 student will have a chance to achieve credits in every one of their subjects during the first term. I encourage you to ask your children what they are doing, what credits they are going for and how their progress is … progressing! Remember the important questions: Where are you going? How are you going? Where to next? Nga mihi Doug Black Principal
