Paeroa College “Excellence in Everything” College Comment Thursday 30th October 2014
Kia ora koutou, For the entire Senior school we are reaching a very significant time of the year, as our students count how far they have come in their achievement and begin to prepare for their external exams. As families and whanau I think it is important to consider how tough and stressful this can be for some of our kids. I would encourage the adults in the family to think about how their work day would be if they had it quantified and measured every hour or so with a specific report on progress given with a grade and then compared to every other person, and then shared with your parents! Therefore I would suggest that you think carefully about how to support your student. Helping them to plan when they have their external exams and sharing this with you is a good idea, as we all know that certain students (particularly in some instances boys), like to handle difficult situations by pretending it isn’t happening. Talking the planning through calmly is good advice and then encouraging a little revision doesn’t hurt. If you have any questions feel free to discuss this with your student’s teacher, Dean or with another relevant member of staff. As I mentioned last week, for those who are a little further away from achieving their goals we will be offering additional support in the case of a Summer school. Details of this will be sent to relevant whanau, but if you need further information, feel free to contact Darren van de Wetering, Denise Grimmer or Rod Coe. To the Y13 students who do finish their formal instruction on Tuesday of next week, I wish all the best. They are a magnificent group of young people whom I have only just started to get to know. The leadership group in particular, have been awesome and their work to support the group, along with that of Mr. Williams, has ensured that we are proud to wave them goodbye but will look forward to welcoming them back in the future. To everyone in the school and community, I extend a warm invitation to the Prize-Giving on Tuesday 4th November at 7.00p.m. I am really looking forward to a great evening of celebration for our whole school and a chance to nod our respect to those learners who have achieved at a frankly fantastic level. There is nothing better than celebrating with your family and I would also like to extend my congratulations to the ‘Luckie’ family and in particular Rachael (an ex Paeroa student) who has just qualified as an Emergency Doctor. All the best to everyone! Doug Black Principal

School is like a big chapter of your life in the beginning of a book. When you’ve finished that chapter the final and best part begins- and our final part is about to begin. I think this year has been a really great year for us and definitely the best. We started the year off with a very successful athletics day and swimming sports, getting the teachers behind it and challenging them to dress up definitely made more students be interested in the events! All of the year 13 students worked together with organising and setting up the formal to make it a night to remember. Everyone was really passionate about changing all the events around this year and making it fun and interesting again. I definitely think we have achieved this, and we have all had an amazing year and made lots of memories that we won’t forget. We just want to say thank you to all the teachers for getting behind us this year and a big thank you Mr Williams for all the support you have given us this year. We couldn’t have asked for a better dean! Good luck to the year 12s next year. I highly recommend everyone to get behind them next year and support them to make their last year one to remember too!

School Defibrillator
Congratulations to Kell Geard who received the “Player of the Year” award for the Thames Valley U16 Rugby Team at their prize-giving last week. Congratulations also to Chloe Flemming who gained a credit award in the Australian Mathematics Competition for 2014.
Recently I applied on behalf of Paeroa College to get a Fonterra Grass Roots funding to purchase an Automated External defibrillator (AED) for Paeroa College. The application was successful and we now have one at the College. Sudden cardiac arrest can affect anyone of any age, background and fitness level and it does not discriminate and gives no warning when it will strike. It will be placed in our student centre and I think it is a great asset to add to the school’s medical equipment. Many thanks to Fonterra for funding this for the school.
