Offense Nick Tomsick Fort Lewis Senior, Guard, 6-1, 185 Broomfield, Colo. / Broomfield HS Tomsick averaged 26.7 points in three games last week in Hawaii. He started the week with 21 points in a road win against Hawaii-Hilo. The next night in an overtime setback to Northern New Mexico, he netted 37 points while hitting six three-pointers. Against Tiffin on Wednesday in another extra peiod loss, Tomsick posted 22 points. In the three games, he shot 47.5 percent from the floor (29-o-f-61), 41.9 percent from long range (13-of-31), and 9-of-11 free throws for 81.8 percent. Tomsick also added four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

He had 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot in a win over St. Martin’s (Wash.) on Friday. Kay added a team-high 17 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, three blocks and three steals in a 72-69 loss at No. 7 Western Washington on Saturday.

RMAC Men’s Basketball News & Notes Adams State University (3-0, 0-0 RMAC) Offense: Justin Kauffman (Junior, Guard, 6-2, Anchorage, Alaska / West Anchorage HS) Kauffman scored 27 points in his first game for the Grizzlies this season after recently ending the football season. Justin shot five for eight behind the three point line in a 93-90 win over South Dakota School of Mines. Defense: Jaree Crawford (Junior, Forward, 6-5, Gary, IN / Gary Lew Wallace HS) Crawford led both teams with 13 rebounds in a 93-90 win over the South Dakota School of Mines. Eleven of Jaree’s 13 rebounds were defensive. Black Hills State University (2-1, 0-0 RMAC) Team Notes: The South Dakota School of Mines visited the Young Center on Tuesday night to take on the Yellow Jackets and walked away with the close victory by a score of 72-68. The loss was the first of the season for the Jackets who now move to 1-1 on the year overall. Senior, Tommy Earl, was 3-for-3 in the first half to lead the Jackets with nine points at the break as Joey Mitchell had seven points on 3-of-6 shooting. By game’s end, Mitchell lead the way with 17 points as Earl finished with 16 points with three rebounds and three steals. Black Hills State came out ready to play on Saturday night as they defeated the Augustana Vikings at home 83-67. The Yellow Jackets were consistent on both ends of the floor shooting 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from behind the arc and holding Augie to a 42 percent and 23 percent shooting effort. Sophomore forward Riley Ryan led the Jackets in scoring with 17 total points, followed closely by junior Joey Mitchell, who shot four for five from behind the arc and had a total of 16 points for the game. Also in double digits for scoring were Tommy Earl with 14 points and Myles Henry with 13. Next up for the Yellow Jackets will be an exhibition game versus the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., on Monday, December 2nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Chadron State College (3-1, 0-0 RMAC) Team Notes: The Eagles will be on the road this weekend traveling to Grand Junction, Colo., December 6th to face the Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, December 7th travel to Gunnison, Colo. to play the Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m. Colorado Christian University (2-2, 0-0 RMAC) Offense: Avery Redmond ( Senior, Guard, 5-11, Plano, Texas/ North Lake College) Redmond averaged 23.5 points this weekend as the Cougars went 2-0 against JWU and OPSU. Against Panhandle, Redmond connected on five treys to lead all scorers with 28 points. The senior guard also tallied nine rebounds and six assists, and went 15-18 from the foul line. Colorado Mesa University (2-2, 0-0 RMAC) Team Notes: Jerry Duckworth drained five 3-pointers and Mike Melillo added a double-double (13 points and 12 rebounds) to lead the Colorado Mesa to a 69-64 defeat over Montana Western Friday (Nov. 29) in the Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Classic. The win was the first for head coach Andy Shantz. Montana Western closed the Mesa lead to just two points 66-64 with 23 seconds remaining, but Landon Vermeer and Mike Melillo made a combined four free throws to lift the Mavericks to their first win of the season. Colorado Mesa out-scored CSU-Pueblo 15-7 over the final five minutes to defeat the Thunderwolves 79-77 in the Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic Sunday (Dec. 1). CMU got off to a slow start in the contest committing 10 of its 16 turnovers in the first half due in part to the full court press by CSUP. Pueblo capitalized with 27 points off turnovers. Landon Vermeer led Mesa with a game-high 16 points, including a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc. Mesa shot 58-percent (30-51) from the floor and 56-percent (9-16) from behind the arc, but shot just 53-percent (10-19) from the free throw line. Mesa improves to 2-2 overall and will host Chadron State Friday, Dec. 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the RMAC opener for both schools. Colorado School of Mines (4-0, 0-0 RMAC) Offense: Will Carr (Senior, Center, 6-11, Warsaw, Ill. / West Hancock HS) Carr recorded a season-high 17 points in Friday’s 87-69 win against Northwestern Oklahoma State, shooting 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 at the foul line in only 11 minutes off the bench. With Mines trailing 7-5, Carr scored layups on three consecutive possessions in a 1:04 span to put the Orediggers in front for good. He also had two assists and one rebound. Defense: Gokul Natesan (Freshman, Forward, 6-5, Santa Clara, Cali. / Cupertino HS) Natesan, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, had eight points and team-highs in steals (5) and assists (4) in Friday’s 87-69 win against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The conference leader with 18 steals, Natesan has four or more takeaways in three straight games, including a team season-best seven at S.D. Mines on November 23rd. Team Notes: No. 24 Mines improved to 4-0 with an 87-69 home win against Northwestern Oklahoma State in its lone contest of the week on Friday. The Orediggers posted a plus-10 rebounding margin in the win, which helped to offset a season-low 14.3 percent shooting effort form the perimeter. Senior Brett Green notched 19 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor, including a robust 12-of-13 effort from the foul line. He also led the team with seven rebounds and added two assists as well on the offensive end. Senior Will Carr finished with 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the field in only 11 minutes while also finishing 3-of-4 from the foul line. Junior Trevor Ritchie added 12 points, three assists and two steals, finishing 3-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the foul line. Reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week Gokul Natesan added eight points in addition to team-highs in assists with four and steals with five. Brian Muller notched nine points and Trevor Wages added eight in addition to six rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
RMAC Men’s Basketball News & Notes Colorado State University - Pueblo (2-2, 0-0 RMAC) Team Notes: CSU-Pueblo turned a treacherous second half into a rousing comeback Saturday, going on a 15-4 run in the game’s final minutes to defeat Montana Western 87-81. The Pack defense held Montana Western without a field goal for the final 6:07 of the game, during which time the Pack piled on 20 points to just eight by Montana Western. CSU-Pueblo saw a would-be win fall through the cracks in the final moments as Colorado Mesa outlasted the Pack 79-77 at the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction Sunday. The game’s frustrating end came on the heels of an otherwise solid performance offensively for the Pack as four ThunderWolves scored in double figures, led by Tigner’s 19 points. Julian Caldwell followed up with 17 points and nine rebounds. CSU-Pueblo, now 2-2 on the young season, will begin RMAC play this week when it travels to Adams State and Fort Lewis Friday and Saturday. RMAC Offensive Player of the Week
Defense: Alex Herrera (Junior, Center, 6-9, Ignacio, Colo./ Ignacio HS) Herrera blocked seven shots and added two steals in three games last week from Hilo, Hawaii. He averaged a double-double with 16.7 points per game and 12.7 rebounds per game as the Skyhawks went 1-2. Both losses came in overtime games. Four of Herrera’s seven blocks on the week came in the first game of the week in a win over Hawaii-Hilo. Herrera, who totaled 27 defensive rebounds on the week (9.0 defensive rebounds per game), posted doubledoubles in the first two games (18 points, 16 rebounds vs. UHH, 10 points, 15 rebounds vs. Northern NM). Offensively, Herrera was solid from the floor as he made 50 percent of his shots, (17-of-34) and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe (62.5 percent). Metropolitan State University of Denver (3-1, 0-0 RMAC) Offense: Brandon Jefferson (Senior, Guard, 5-9, Flower Mound, Texas / Lewisville HS) RMAC preseason player of the year Brandon Jefferson did not disappoint last week, averaging 21.0 points, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists, while shooting 6-of10 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 at the free throw line. He had a season-high 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting, burying 5-of-7 from the outside in a win over St. Martin’s (Wash.) on Friday, while adding four steals. Jefferson scored 14 points and had five assists and three steals in a 72-69 loss to No. 7 Western Washington on Saturday. He twice brought the Roadrunners within two points in the final two minutes, burying a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 69-67 and then hitting a jumper with five seconds left to trim WWU’s lead to 71-69. New Mexico Highlands University (3-1, 0-0 RMAC) Team Notes: The Cowboys will travel to Lakewood, Colo., to face the CCU Cougars in their first RMAC action on December 6th, at 8 p.m. Regis University (3-2, 0-0 RMAC) Offense: Spencer Reeb (Freshman, Guard/Forward, 6-5, 200, Broomfield, Colo. / Broomfield HS) Reed scored eight points on three free throws, a layup and the final three points on a three pointer to put Regis ahead of Northwestern Oklahoma State 62-61 with just under a minute left in the game, before the Rangers fell 67-62 down the stretch.
