2013 RMAC Women’s Soccer News & Notes Adams State University (4-4-4, 1-3-4 RMAC) Offense: Allie Mercado (Junior, Forward/Midfield, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) Mercado added to her goals total on the season with a goal against New Mexico Highlands in a double-overtime, 3-3 tie. It was Mercado’s sixth goal of the season. Colorado Christian University (4-7-0, 1-6-0 RMAC) Team Notes: CCU turned in an impressive effort in a 0-1 loss against the nation’s fifth-ranked team, Colorado School of Mines. The Cougars kept the RMAC-leading Orediggers at bay until the eighth overtime minute, when the winning goal was finally scored. CCU plays at Metro State on Friday before hosting Western State on Sunday. Colorado Mesa University (5-7-0, 4-4-0 RMAC) Offense: Monica Carlos (Freshman, Forward, Waimea, Hawaii/ Honoka’a HS) Carlos scored her first collegiate goal in the Mavericks’ loss to Metro State on Sunday Defense: Sam Burneo (Senior, Defense, Las Vegas, Nev./Desert Oasis HS) Colorado School of Mines (11-0-1, 8-0-0 RMAC) Offense: Rachael Turner (Sophomore, Midfield, Spring, Texas/Klein HS) RMAC Offensive Player of the Week Defense: Jordan Hopper (Senior, Defense, Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls HS) Hopper earned her team-leading second assist Friday against Colorado Mesa, feeding sophomore Rachael Turner for the eventual game-winner in the 59th minute. She also guided the defense to its program record-tying fifth straight shutout and 10th in 12 games, limiting the Mavericks and Colorado Christian to seven combined shots, three shots on goal and only two corner tries. Hopper and the back third have allowed less than eight shots in 11 consecutive matches. Team Notes: Mines continued its impressive run in 2013, setting the program record with eight straight wins and extending its record unbeaten streak to 26 straight matches – tied for ninth-longest in Division II history – via a 3-0 shutout Friday against Colorado Mesa and 1-0 overtime decision at Colorado Christian Sunday. The women have blanked their last five opponents, tying the team record for consecutive shutouts for the second time this season, and are 29:43 away from matching the Mines record for consecutive scoreless minutes of 580:10. Sophomore Rachael Turner led Mines with three points over the weekend, scoring the eventual game-winner at 58:04 Friday and setting up the decisive goal with 2:35 remaining in the first overtime Sunday. Sophomore Mel Westhoff recorded the golden goal and her first collegiate score with 2:35 remaining in the extra session at CCU. Senior Bree Archuleta scored her third of the season and freshman Jaclyn Knott earned her fourth, most among Oredigger freshmen, in the second half versus the Mavericks. Sophomore Jayln Yates (11-0-1) earned her ninth shutout in goal Sunday, making two saves. Yates is two shutouts shy of equaling her single-season record set in 2012 and six away from tying Briana Schulze (26; 2007-10) for both the career lead at Mines and No. 23 in the NCAA record book. With his 56th win at the helm Friday, fourth-year head coach Kevin Fickes overtook sole possession of first place in team history in career coaching wins, surpassing the program’s first skipper and current men’s coach, Frank Kohlenstein. Defense: Allison Jordan (Sophomore, Defense, Liberty Lake, Wash./Central Valley HS) Jordan continues to be the Cowgirls’ best defender in 2013. She has played in every single minute for the Cowgirls and anchors the NMHU back line with her tireless effort. Regis University (4-6-1, 2-5-1 RMAC) Offense: C.C. Western State Colorado University (4-7-1, 1-6-1 RMAC) Team Notes: Despite leading in nearly every category, including shots and corner kicks, Western was unable to put the ball in the back of the net against CSU-Pueblo on Friday, losing 2-4. Mountaineers fell 4-2 at home in Gunnison, Colo. Western will be back on the road for the next two games. The Mountaineers will face UC-Colorado Springs on Oct. 18 before matching up against the Cougars of Colorado Christian on Oct. 20.
