CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS www.uacdl.org

Come Join Us The Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (UACDL) invites you to join Utah’s only statewide criminal defense organization that is dedicated to protecting fundamental constitutional liberties, advocating for criminal justice reform, and protecting criminal defense lawyer’s independent judgment. UACDL is an affiliate of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and teams with that organization to carry out its mission. UACDL serves defense lawyers, investigators, law students, legal assistants, and other persons involved in defending the criminally accused throughout Utah.

Eight Reasons To Join UACDL Cle:

UACDL presents high-quality CLE events on cutting-edge criminal law issues. The organization offers members at least six hours of free CLE a year throughout all parts of the state. In addition, UACDL offers discounts to members for its annual two-day seminar at which nationally-recognized scholars and local experts train members. UACDL also convenes annual seminars on specialty topics including DUI defense, capital cases, juvenile law, white collar cases, and new lawyer training. And, UACDL operates a Trial Academy that is staffed by the best trial attorneys in the State of Utah. All UACDL members receive discounted pricing to seminars that are far less than comparable seminars both locally and nationally.

Case Law Updates and Criminal Law Related Literature Members of UACDL may access expertise from over 450 criminal defense lawyers via a members-only email Listserv. Users post inquiries about legal issues, swap pleadings and ideas, and solicit help such as obtaining court coverage from fellow members. The Listserv also provides insight on judges, prosecutors,

police officers, and experts. Only UACDL members have access to the Listserv.

Members-Only Website Access The UACDL website (www.uacdl.org) contains a vast password-protected brief bank reserve of sample motions, legal memoranda, and appellate briefs to assist members in defending their clients. The website also includes scholarly articles on recent developments in criminal law, police policy manuals, jail locations details, expert lists, courtapproved interpreters, and a catalogue of police and prosecutorial impeachment material.

“The Defender” Magazine Members receive the quarterly “Defender” magazine which includes scholarly articles, practice pointers, local and national criminal justice news, information about upcoming CLE events, and federal and state case law updates. "The Defender" also reports on members' activities and achievements.

Utah Journal Of Criminal Law Members also receive copies of the Utah Journal of Criminal Law which is a law review quality publication that the organization jointly publishes with the Criminal Law Section of the Utah State Bar. The Journal is published twice a year and contains scholarly articles written by judges, criminal defense lawyers, prosecutors, and academics on areas affecting both the defense and prosecution of criminal defendants. This publication is designed to increase the level of practice throughout the state, increase cooperation among the various actors in the criminal justice system, and advance UACDL’s mission of protecting fundamental constitutional liberties.

Amicus Filings On important issues that affect UACDL's mission of protecting criminal defendants’ fundamental rights, the Amicus Committee files friend-of-the-court briefs and motions in both trial and appellate courts. Members may petition the committee for amicus assistance to support their own legal positions.

Strike Force Presentation UACDL’s Strike Force Committee provides back up to members who are personally attacked for defending their clients’ rights. Regardless of whether judges, prosecutors, or others are interfering with the defense of accused persons, the Strike Force Committee stands ready to step in and help. Members under siege are eligible for tree legal representation in addition to support from the entire organization.

Legislative Voice UACDL’s Legislative Committee partners with libertyminded groups to sponsor legislation that improves the efficiency of the criminal justice system and protects fundamental rights. Likewise, the committee monitors criminal-law related legislation and works with legislators, law enforcement, police makers to ensure fairness. Committee members also actively participate in reform efforts that are designed to adopt best practices and provide alternatives to incarceration. UACDL members also serve on the Utah Sentencing Commission and the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice where state criminal justice policy is debated and established. Finally, the committee tracks court rule-making committees and other policy boards who regulate the practice of criminal law.
