3 Cover the mats with a little sieved compost, approx. 6mm (¼”), and water to moisten the compost — allow to drain. 4 Cover pots with a piece of paper and maintain a temperature of 18-21ºC (65-70ºF). Remove paper when seeds begin to sprout.

• Support plants with canes as required and feed regularly.

6 When the plants have grown to fill their pots, plant out into large containers in the greenhouse or conservatory or in warmer areas in the garden. Allow 35–45cm (14–18”) between plants.

5 At two leaf stage, transfer seedlings singly into 9cm (3½”) pots and grow on.
