# RMAC Tournament

This Week: Metro State will host Regis University in its final home weekend of the year. Friday’s doubleheader starts at noon and Saturday’s begins at 11 a.m. Tesone Breaks Home Run Records: Jennessa Tesone broke the RMAC and Metro State career home run records with three long balls during the four-game series at New Mexico Highlands (March 26-27). She hit two in game one on March 26 to tie the record of 47, set by Tara Mickelson in 2010. On Sunday, March 27, she hit her 48th career homer in game one, an 11-2 victory. Roundtree Tough to Strike Out: Amber Roundtree currently leads the nation in toughest to strike out, having gone 121 at bats this season without going down on strikes. Only one player in school history as gone an entire season without striking out (min. 90 at bats). Shari McArthur had 95 at bats in 1986 without a strikeout. On a national level, no one has gone an entire season without a strikeout since 1992 when Columbia Union’s K.B. McGuire had 87 at bats without a strikeout in just 22 games. The last time a player had over 100 at bats without a strikeout in a season was 1999 (Stacey Dell’Anno, Merrimack, 138 at bats). Run Streak Ends: When Metro State was shut out 2-0 in game two by Colorado Mines on Feb. 27, it was the first time since Feb. 22, 2009, that Metro State has been held scoreless, a streak of 114 consecutive games of scoring at least one run. That number of games is a school record. No NCAA records are kept for that streak. National Leaders: Complete national and RMAC leaders are listed on page 5. Situational Hitting: This year, Metro State is hitting .299 with runners in scoring position, but opponents are hitting .287. Kasey Nichols is hitting a team-best .519 (14-for-27) with runners in scoring position. Amber Roundtree is hitting .400 (10-for-25) and Danni Hedstrom is right behind at .343 (12-for-35). Metro State has had its leadoff hitter reach base at a .461 clip. With a minimum of 20 chances, Tesone is the best when leading off an inning with a .682 on-base percentage. Lauren Hainlen is right behind her at .593, followed by Amber Roundtree is at .542. Among the Best in RMAC History: Metro State put together one of the best all-around seasons in RMAC history last year. The Roadrunners broke the RMAC ERA record for conference games, posting a 1.47 ERA in 247 innings. Metro State set the conference record for runs per game last season, averaging 8.89 in the RMAC season, totaling 320 runs in 36 games. The Roadrunners tied the team’s 2009 conference record with 320 total runs scored, but the team’s 8.21 runs per game were second to 2009’s average. No other RMAC team has had a team ERA under 4.00 since 2005 and no team has ever had an ERA under 3.00 while averaging over 7.0 runs per game. Metro State also broke the conference home run record with 79 home runs, topping Mesa State’s previous record of 76 in 2006. Conference-only stats started being tracked in 2003. Records Fall at RMAC Tournament: Metro State broke the NCAA single season home run record in the RMAC Championship game against Mesa State last season. The previous record was 98, set by Mesa State in 2001 in 54 games. ArkansasMonticello tied the record in 2007 in 66 games, before Metro State (52 games) and Valdosta State (65 games) both tied the record again last season. Metro State finished the year with 112 homers. Metro State had 20 hits in the first championship game against Mesa State, a 19-6 win in seven innings. It was the first time since April 18, 1990, against Colorado Mines that the Roadrunners had 20+ hits in a game. Season Outlook: Metro State returns seven players who started at least 20 games last season in the field on the team that

won the RMAC regular season and tournament championships and reached the NCAA semifinals with a record of 53-6, including 37-2 in the RMAC. Shortstop Amber Roundtree was named Daktronics honorable mention All-America after leading the team in batting at a .418 clip with 70 runs scored, 24 extra-base hits and 15 stolen bases. Left fielder Jennessa Tesone also returns after hitting .358 with 19 home runs and 62 runs batted in. RMAC Tournament MVP Molly Clark is back in center field and hit .323 with 10 home runs and eight stolen bases. Other returning starters include designated player Julia Diehl, first baseman Aubree Maul, catcher Lauren Hainlen and right fielder Danni Hedstrom. Tara Mickelson, who led the nation in home runs last season, Kellie Nishikida, Jessica Haab and Sarah Rusch will all need to be replaced in the starting lineup. Diehl is the team’s top returning pitcher as well after going 12-1 with a 2.38 ERA in 16 appearances. She allowed a team-best .214 opponent batting average. The Roadrunners must replace its two other pitchers, Christie Robinson and Brittany Moss. Moss was supposed to be a junior this season, but will miss the season due to pregnancy. Metro State Softball History: Metro State is entering just the fourth year of its softball program. In three years, Metro State has gone from a 32-18 finish to two-time defending RMAC regular season and postseason champions and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a semifinals finish in 2010. In 2009, the Roadrunners finished 40-12 and followed that up with a 53-6 mark in 2010, including 37-2 in the RMAC, the best conference record in RMAC history. Metro State had a successful softball program in the late 1980s, but the program disbanded following the 1990 season. It was reinstated in 2008. RMAC Preseason Poll: The Metro State softball team was picked to finish second in the RMAC preseason coaches poll. Mesa State was the preseason favorite in the conference. Adams State’s Katelyn Lovato is the preseason player of the year and Regis’ Bianca Holley is the preseason pitcher of the year. Interestingly, Regis catcher Alisa Heronema, who was named RMAC Player of the Year last year, was not chosen as preseason player of the year, nor was she a unaminous preseason all-conference selection. First baseman Aubree Maul and outfielder Jennessa Tesone were Metro State’s lone representatives on the preseason all-conference team. Records Watch: Nearly all of Metro State’s players are climbing up the lists in the school’s record books. Here is a list of where the players rank in their respective career categories:

Becerra and the coaches were named NFCA Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In Becerra’s second season in 2009, Metro State went 40-12 overall, winning the RMAC regular season and tournament championships in just the second year of the program. The Roadrunners also advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Vanessa Becerra begins her fourth season with Metro State and her first as the interim head coach. She spent the past three seasons as the top assistant under Jen Fisher. In 2010, she helped head coach Jen Fisher earn the highest honor for a college coach, garnering CaptainU National Coach of the Year honors. The Roadrunners made their second straight NCAA Tournament apperance and won their second straight RMAC regular season and tournament championships. Metro State finished the year with a 53-6 mark, including a conference record 37 wins with just two losses. However, the wins were not the only record set by the Roadrunners in 2010. They shattered the national home run record, totaling 112 to top the previous record of 98. They also broke the RMAC records for ERA, runs scored (tied the previous record) and home runs in conference games. Metro State also set the school record by winning 17 consecutive games from April 10 to May 6. The team was led by third baseman Tara Mickelson, who was named Daktronics second team All-America and led the nation in home runs with 25 long balls. Shortstop Amber Roundtree and pitcher Christie Robinson were also honorable mention All-America selections. Robinson was also named RMAC and Central Region Pitcher of the Year. After winning the RMAC regular season title, Metro State bounced back in the loser’s bracket to win the RMAC Tournament after dropping a second round game. The Roadrunners swept Mesa State in the championship, winning 19-6 in the first game and 11-9 in 10 innings in the championship game. They went on to go 3-0 at the regional tournament, topping Mesa State again and Minnesota State twice. Facing No. 17 Wayne State (Neb.) in the super regional, Metro State won game one 2-1 on a walk-off home run by Jennessa Tesone and took game two 6-2 in nine innings to advance to the World Series. At the World Series in St. Joseph, Mo., the Roadrunners fell in the opening round to No. 19 Angelo State (Texas) in a game that will be remembered for 20 illegal pitches called on the Roadrunners. Fisher’s team regrouped and edged No. 7 Wayne State (Mich.) 1-0 and No. 1 North Georgia 4-1, beating first team All-America pitchers in each game.

Metro State went 32-18 overall in 2008, the first season of softball for Metro State since the program was reinstated. In conference play, Metro State finished with a 26-11 mark, a second-place finish in the RMAC East Division and a trip to the conference tournament. Additionally, the Roadrunners led the nation in home runs per game. Besides the Roadrunners’ exploits on the field, the team established a partnership with the Denver West High School softball team off the field, as the Roadrunners helped the girls with life skills, academic and personal pressures. The team received a community engagement award from the NCAA for its efforts. Becerra spent the 2006-07 season at Armstrong Atlantic University in Savannah, Ga., where she was the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to her time at Armstrong Atlantic, Becerra played for two seasons under Fisher at Otero Junior College. While at Otero, she earned all-America and Region IX Player of the Year honors in 2005, and also helped the Rattlers to two Region IX championships. Becerra graduated from Metro State in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in sport industry operations. She gave birth to a girl, Makaila, in June, 2010
