PRACTICE
&
COMPETITION FACILITIES Frank M. Lindsay Track & Field features an eight-lane, allweather track provides a Rekortan running surface, like that seen at Olympic training centers and competition facilities. Designed by former Olympian Don Paige, the track features space for concurrent competition, multidirectional runways for field events and curbing channel drains to ensure proper drainage. Areas have also been developed for the throwing events such as the shot put and discus. A gift of $1 million from the Lindsay family provided the state-of-the-art athletic facilities. As part of the funding for the facilities, Millikin received a grant of $152,228 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, through the Bureau of Energy and Recycling's Used Tire Recovery Program.
In July of 2000 and 2001, Millikin hosted the USATF Youth Athletic Championships on the renovated track and in May 2001 and 2004 the Big Blue welcomed the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships. In September 2000, the Decatur Indoor Sports Center was built as a joint project of the Decatur Park District and Millikin. The DISC offers a four-lane, 200-meter competition-grade Mondo track, which includes a six-lane sprint straight-away, a jumping pit and a vaulting area. The curves of the track are elatively gentle for an indoor track with nearly the maximum radius allowed by track and field rules. 2011 Big Blue Track & Field - 3

LOOKING AT
2011 -
MEN
Millikin Head Track and Field Coach Kelly Cox is back for her second year as she continues building the Big Blue track and field program into contenders for top of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The strength of the 2011 Millikin men’s team should be in the sprints, jumps and throws. Millikin returns two of the conference’s top sprinters in Carleston Acres and Kieron Boyd, but like last season an injury may slow the progress of the duo.
In 2010, it was Boyd that missed the Indoor season and was slowed
during the outdoor campaign due to injury.
This season it is Acres who is
recovering from a knee injury that occurred while playing for the Big Blue football team. Acres was Millikin’s Men’s Track MVP in 2010.
During the Indoor season,
he won the 55 meter dash (6.51) at the CCIW Championships and finished in fourth at the championships in the 200 meters (22.92) and the long jump (22-2.50).
In the Outdoor season, Acres ran the ninth fastest 100 meters
(10.74) in Millikin men’s track history. Boyd earned All-Conference honors at the 2010 CCIW Outdoor Championships in the 100 meter dash with a seventh place finish (11.09). In 2009, Boyd was Millikin’s Most Value Track and Field Athlete.
He won
CCIW Championships at the 2009 Indoor meet in the 55 meters (6.47) and the 200 meters (22.61) and took third in the triple jump (45-1.0).
At the 2009
CCIW Outdoor Championships, Boyd was third in the triple jump 44-1.50) and the 100 meter dash (11.16). The Big Blue men have several talented athletes that will provide Millikin depth in the sprints and jump events.
Heading a strong group of returners is
junior Aron Kays who finished in third place in the 100 meters (10.95) at the 2010 CCIW Outdoor Championships.
Other talented returners include
Adam Kays, John Meadows, Ibn Powell and Jordan Rahar.
That group
moved into the number three position on the Millikin all-timer performance list last season in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:32.57.
Coach Cox is also
expecting solid performance in the triple and long jump from junior Julian Ford. The Big Blue are expecting significant contribution from a fast group of freshmen sprinters and jumpers including Jordan Chlebus, Ronnie McGregor Frank McWard, Ryan White and hurdler Jonathan Logue. The 2010 Millikin men’s track team should also be a force in the throws lead by seniors Peter Trofimuk, Kyle Taylor and Mike DeMeio and junior Tommy Eddleman. Trofimuk is the Millikin record holder in the hammer (158-02) and was Millikin’s Indoor Track MVP in 2010. Junior Tommy Eddleman was Millikin’s Outdoor Field Events MVP and Most Improved in the Field Events in 2010. (151-10).
During Outdoor season, earned All Conference in the hammer with an eighth place finish
In the 2010 Indoor season, he moved into sixth on the Millikin all-time performance list in the
weight throw (14.28 meters). Taylor and DeMeio will be factors in the outdoor season.
Taylor earned all conference honors last
season in the javelin and is number eight on the Millikin all-time javelin performance list.
DeMeio was
eighth in the discus (139.11) at the 2010 CCIW Outdoor Championships earning All Conference honors for the second straight season. Sophomore Caleb Ball is back in the pole vault after turning in Millikin’s seventh best indoor performance last season (3.97 meters).
Freshman Ryan Bittick gives the Big Blue a second opportunity for
points in the pole vault. Freshman Drew Blaase and Kevin Martin head up the Millikin distance runners after solid cross country campaigns.
Freshman Garrett Hogan has recovered from a injury in cross country and should also be a
factor in the distance events.

Sherron heads up an outstanding group of returning throwers that includes junior Emilie Altenberger and sophomore LeAnn Spesard. Sherron was Millikin’s Outdoor Field Events MVP last year after earning All-America honors with a fifth place finish in the discus (141-4) at the NCAA DIII National Outdoor Championships.
Sherron set a new Millikin record in the discus with a throw of 147-8.

She was Millikin’s Indoor Field Events MVP winning the CCIW Championships in the shot put. Freshman Jessica Davison will add additional depth in the throws. Starwalt leads a talented group of hurdlers, sprinters and jumpers.
Starwalt was Millikin’s Outdoor Track MVP after
qualifying for the NCAA DIII Nationals in the 400 meter hurdles with fourth fastest qualifying time in the nation at 1:02.21, which was a new Millikin record.
Starwalt won the 400 hurdles at the CCIW Championships (1:04.15) and ran leg on Millikin’s 4X400
