2012 William Paterson Baseball Head Coach Mike Lauterhahn About to begin his fifth season as his alma mater’s head coach in 2011, former William Paterson standout Mike Lauterhahn has quickly made an impact on the Pioneer baseball program. During his first year at the helm of the William Paterson program, the Pioneers were 23-19 overall and earned their first postseason victory since 2004, defeating host Montclair State 8-6 in the opening game of the 2008 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament. Three of his players earned selections to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State Team, including Mike Guadango, a first-team all-conference and second-team allAmerica honoree. In 2009, Lauterhahn led the Pioneers to a 2417 overall record and a 12-6 mark in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play as William Paterson reached the finals of the conference tournament. Seven of his charges earned all-NJAC laurels, including three first-team honorees, and Guadango was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Team for the second straight year (third team). Last spring, the Pioneers battled through injuries to compile a 16-21-1 overall mark, led by junior lefty pitcher Brett Carroll, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. A member of the New Jersey State Baseball Coaches Association Executive Committee and the Northeast’s coach at the 2004-06 Senior State All-Star Games, Lauterhahn worked as a William Paterson assistant coach during the fall season from 2000-06, and as a staff member for the Joe Wladyka Camps from 2001-07. He taught history at Rutherford High School (200407), and previously served as a social studies teacher at Wallington Junior/Senior High School (2001-04) and as a fifth-grade teacher at Frank W. Gavlak School in Wallington (19962001). An all-New Jersey Athletic Conference outfielder for the Pioneers after transferring from Rutgers-Newark, Lauterhahn helped lead William Paterson to a 56-24 two-year record (1993-94), the 1993 NJAC title and a berth in that year’s NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994, he spent two years in the Cubs’ farm system before returning to William Paterson to finish his studies in 1997.
single by Nick Turano, followed by a wild pitch and a single by Sean Kelly scored the walk-off run for the Profs. Three singles by the Rowan offense allowed the Profs to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Pioneers responded in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles by Montanile and senior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional). Junior catcher Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./ Pequannock) drew the one-out walk, and senior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Montanile to cross the plate and even the score. Flores led off the top of the sixth with a walk and a stolen base, and was able to score on an overthrow by the Rowan catcher to put WP in front, 2-1. A leadoff double by Somers in the seventh frame allowed freshman Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) to lay down the sacrifice bunt to move Somers to third. He later scored on a single to right-center by senior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), to stretch the Pioneer lead, 3-1. Rowan responded in its half of the frame, starting with a one-out walk by Matt Hill. Turano doubled to left field, and Kelly’s two-RBI single evened the score at 3-3. Flores and Montanile both singled, putting runners on the corners for William Paterson in the top of the eighth. Derner’s single to left field allowed Flores to scamper home. Derner and Montanile both moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Somers’ single to center allowed both runs to score to put the Pioneers ahead, 6-3. Rowan scored five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Hill, which allowed the Profs to take an 8-6 lead. The loss went to reliever Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley), after surrendering one run in 1.1 innings of work. Sophomore Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) got the start for the Pioneers, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out three. Junior J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./ Pascack Valley) struck out two, but allowed five runs in 1.0 inning. Senior Ryan Peterson picked up the win for the Profs, allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Starter Steve Melchiorre went 7.1 innings, surrendering four earned runs. Turano finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored, and Kelly was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Montanile went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Pioneers, while Somers finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. GAME TWO The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Derner led off with a single, and scored on a Fondacaro double to center field. Rowan answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when Turano’s solo home run to left field knotted the score at 1-1. Flores singled to center to start the sixth inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Montanile. Derner doubled to center field to allow Flores to cross the plate, and put WP in front 2-1. The Pioneers put up four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the win. Montanile singled and circled to third on an error
2012 William Paterson Baseball committed by the Profs’ defense. Derner was intentionally walked, and later advanced on a wild pitch that allowed Montanile to score. Fondacaro singled, and junior James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for WP. Sophomore second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) singled to center, allowing Derner and Fondacaro to score. Somers plated Lauer on a sacrifice fly, to make the score 6-1. Junior Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) earned the complete-game win to improve to 4-0 on the season, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out 11 batters. Curtis Arsi suffered the loss for Rowan, allowing six runs in 7.1 innings. Fondacaro finished 3-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored, and Montanile was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Derner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
2012 Season Outlook After finishing 20-17-1 overall and 8-10 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play during the 2011 season, William Paterson is not looking to just the upperclassmen for productivity, but rather having someone, regardless of class, step up every day and be a leader. Two major factors will contribute to the success of WP this spring. The first is starting three freshman during the 2011 campaign has given the Pioneers a wealth of conference experience heading into this season, and last year’s rookies now have the experience of how to deal with the grind of a 40-game schedule during a month and a half of play. The second factor is the team chemistry that has been built already this spring. There is great depth on the 2012 squad, including a very strong recruiting class and transfers who are pushing returning players for time, making for intense internal competition. After a season with the new composite bats, the Pioneers have adjusted to the new way the college game is being played. William Paterson has reconnected with the importance of using small-ball and defense to win games, realizing the importance of sacrifice bunts and moving people into scoring position by driving the ball the other way, not just power hitting. “We need to put the ball in play and make people make plays,” stated fifth-year head coach Mike Lauterhahn. “Our players are tired of being an average team, and now is the time to prove we are capable of being in the top half of the conference.” INFIELD The Pioneers return six letterwinners to the infield from last season, providing valuable conference experience. Junior Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) missed last season due to an injury, but will bring two seasons of experience behind the plate. Fondacaro has good arm strength and works well with the pitching staff, and will prove to be an invaluable addition if he can remain healthy. Sophomore Mike Arecchi (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) saw action in 10 games his rookie season and has made great strides in just one year in the program. Improved footwork and good arm strength will prove to be valuable assets and allow Arecchi to be a contributor this spring. A transfer from the University of Rhode Island, freshman Eric Greenwald (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) will compete for playing time and Lauterhahn is looking forward to his future development.

A 2011 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III All-State Second Team member, senior Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) provides the power in the Pioneer line-up. Finishing last season with a .387 batting average, 29 RBI and 15 extra-base hits, the first baseman will look to improve upon a successful offensive 2011 campaign at the plate. Committing only three errors in 152 chances at second base last season, sophomore Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) will anchor the Pioneer infield and provide a wealth of experience learned over last season when he started in 30 games as a freshman. Ptaszynski earned New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III All-Rookie Team, NJCBA Division II/III Rookie of the Week (April 20) and the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week (April 18) honors. Over the winter, he has improved his arm strength and has shown the ability to hit to all fields, making him as much of an offensive weapon as he is a defensive one. Competing for time with Ptaszynski will be sophomore Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), who gained playing experience at the end of last season when Ptaszynski suffered an injury. Pasternak can provide a spark off the bench with the ability to hit for contact and bunt, while also making defensive progressions in his ability to turn the double play. A three-year starter, senior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./ Lyndhurst) provides an extensive amount of conference experience and good arm strength at shortstop for the Pioneers. According to Lauterhahn, Dorio has developed leadership skills and will be relied upon to bounce back after an uncharacteristic offensive effort last spring. Competing for playing time will be freshman K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley). An injury prevented fall play, but Abel will see significant time in three infield positions because of his good arm strength and versatility. Abel has shown a lot of promise during preseason and could be an offensive powerhouse for WP this spring. Two new faces will be pushing for playing time at third base in 2012. Freshman Mike Arnold (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had a great fall season, showing fantastic arm strength and range. Offensively, Arnold swings the bat well and can hit for both contact and power. Competing for time will be junior transfer from Mercer Community College, James Lauer (Hamilton, N.J./Pennington Prep). A converted shortstop, Lauer has good range and also can hit for power. OUTFIELD Returning four letterwinners from a season ago, the outfield will prove to be the most seasoned area for the Pioneers, featuring four upperclassmen who can make an impact, especially in conference play. A two-year starter, senior Jack Montanile (Weehawken, N.J./ Hudson Catholic) has proven to be a mainstay in the Pioneer outfield, providing good range and arm strength defensively. He has made offensive strides during the off-season, and has an ability to steal bases and get into scoring position. Making the move to the infield during the fall, Montanile’s defensive capabilities may also allow him to see time at first base this spring. A transfer from Kean University, junior Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) will look to bounce back from an injury that prevented him from playing during the 2011 season. Gibbons has the ability to keep double plays in order, covers a lot of ground and
2012 William Paterson Softball has great arm strength. He also provides speed on the base paths, which will provide a scoring threat for the Pioneers. Sophomore A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) showed a lot of poise, athleticism and versatility during his rookie season. Originally recruited as an outfielder, Flores started all 38 games for the Pioneers at third base, earning a spot on the 2011 NJCBA Division II/III All-Rookie Team. Flores covers a lot of ground and has great arm strength as a defender. Batting .329 as a freshman with a team-leading 49 hits, eight sacrifice bunts and four sac flies, Flores has the ability to hit for contact and enough speed to be a threat on the base paths after stealing 10 bases a year ago. A 2011 NJCBA Division II/III second-team all-state and an honorable-mention all-NJAC honoree, senior three-year starter Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) provides a lefty bat in the Pioneer line-up. Owning an on-base percentage of .461 and team-leading 27 walks a year ago, Somers has the ability to get on base and set up numerous scoring opportunities for the Pioneers. He covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and Lauterhahn says that Somers has one of the best arms on the roster. Junior Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) earned third-team NJCBA Division II/III all-State accolades, posting a .340 batting average with 19 RBI a season ago. Hansen will provide conference experience after appearing in 34 games last spring, and will provide an offensive threat for the Pioneers in 2012. His versatility and some changes in the off-season may see Hansen behind the plate sporadically for WP. STARTING PITCHING William Paterson’s starting rotation provides a balance of new and old faces. A junior transfer from Monmouth University, Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) brings a very competitive presence with him, as well as good velocity. He can change speeds and knows how to use pitches in appropriate situations. A right-handed junior transfer will also be asked to become a part of the starting rotation in Glenn Flora (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst). Coming to William Paterson from Brookdale Community College, Flora provides the Pioneers with power pitching, as well as finesse. Flora struck out a league-leading 60 batters at Brookdale and has the velocity to really make an impact in conference play this spring. Looking to build upon an impressive rookie campaign will be sophomore lefty Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford). Jensen was named to the NJCBA Division II/III All-Rookie Team, honored as NJCBA Rookie Pitcher of the Week (April 2) and was the NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week (March 28). Finishing with a 4-2 record in 11 appearances last spring, Jensen saw his innings limited last season to preserve his arm, and that low total will allow him to be the effective pitcher the coaching staff believes he can be this spring. The maturity and growth seen last season will prove to be one of his greatest strengths moving into the 2012 season. Moving into the starting rotation will be junior lefty James Young (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne). Young was used as a conference middle-reliever during the 2011 season, and Lauterhahn has seen enough development and maturity during the last year to move Young into the starting rotation. Young was 4-2 in nine appearances for the Pioneers, compiling a 3.38 ERA.

RELIEF PITCHING After spending the last two seasons at Sussex Community College, junior lefty Tim O’Shea (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson) will bring big-game experience into the bullpen, playing in the regional tournament with Sussex last season. O’Shea might be small in stature at 5-9, but the ball flies out of his hand and when the fastball isn’t working he can finesse outs. Freshman Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) is a big righty with very good velocity and is currently working on a two-seam fastball for more movement. “Tom is a change-up away from being a complete package pitcher,” said Lauterhahn. In addition to his work on the mound, Gaccione may show his athleticism by spending some time at first base to help groom him for future play. Senior Dan Alcala (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) has been a three-year contributor and will provide the staff with conference experience and a pitcher who knows how to throw strikes when he’s called upon. Sophomore Pete Savastano (Wayne, N.J./ Wayne Valley) worked hard on a cut fastball in the off-season that, when paired with his velocity, will allow WP to bring him in to get through a line-up. The 6-6 sophomore righty Matt Serra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) had a very strong summer season and has learned how to pitch, not just how to throw. He was able to get conference experience late last season that will help make him a conference regular in 2012. Freshman Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) brings a competitive edge with him to the collegiate level. Lauterhahn says Monaghan is a student of the game who is very easy to teach, and the Pioneers’ mentor is anxious to see how Monaghan develops during the spring. A walk-on, lefty freshman Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills Regional) had a very productive fall season and did a great job with left-handed hitters, making him valuable coming out of the bullpen. Junior J.J. Moran (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) is coming off of a back injury that limited his play last season, but Lauterhahn says they will bring him along slowly. Moran will start the season as a long reliever/ closer because of his wealth of experience, and the coaching staff hopes to have him back to a starting role by the second half of the season if he is physically capable of doing so. Freshman right handed pitcher Mitch D’Amato (Edison, N.J./ Edison) is very competitive coming out of a successful high school program and has a two-seam fastball that he won’t be afraid to challenge hitters with. He put up very productive numbers in the fall and will be seen in a lot of non-conference games to help him develop during the 2012 season.
