A rock or a bird?

(Jake Chapman 2002/2004 Demos)

•  If you want to throw an object to land in a particular place you can use Newton’s laws of motion to calculate how to do so –  this works well for things like rocks

•  But it utterly fails if you are throwing a bird –  A bird is a complex, adaptive system

Homework   Task:          Talk  to  neighbour  for  5  minutes:       “What  homework  can  you  do  in  the  next  2-‐4   days  to  help  you  capture  and  remember  the   points  from  this  conference  that  are  parFcularly   valuable  to  you?”

An  example   •  Challenger  disaster  1986   •  What  was  known   •  What  was  believed   •  Why?

Reason’s Swiss cheese model

A  safe  culture   •  What  is  the  dominant  message  –  keeping  families   together  or  protecFng  children  beZer?   •  Managing  the  pressure  to  save  money   •  Team  level  –  how  to  talk  of  worries  and  possible   failure  to  make  a  family  safe  enough  without   reinforcing  any  sense  of  personal  failure?
