Sept. 19 - Weekly Report 2016 Big South Football • 3
2016 Big South Football BIG SOUTH AND ASUN CONFERENCE ESTABLISH FCS MEMBER PARTNERSHIP The Big South Conference and ASUN Conference (ASUN) announced on Sept. 13 a unique FCS member partnership that will strengthen both leagues and strategically reinforce the future of Big South football. The partnership, which takes effect immediately, guarantees a football “home” within the Big South Conference for ASUN members that play scholarship football. Under the arrangement, current or future ASUN Conference members that sponsor scholarship football will automatically be admitted as associate football members into the Big South Conference, so long as they are based in a predetermined geographical footprint that spans the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. TIS THE CONFERENCE SEASON For the first time, the Conference portion of the season kicks off in September, as Charleston Southern visits Monmouth in the earliest Big South game in the league’s 15-year history. The Bucs are 5-9 all-time in Big South openers, and is opening league play on the road for the first time since 2013. Monmouth is 0-2 in its Big South lidlifters, but has 12 conference-opening victories to its credit in the program’s first 23 years. The next Big South game after this weekend is Oct. 8. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL SEASON DEBUT ON ESPN3 THIS SATURDAY The Big South Conference will again televise eight football games exclusively on ESPN3 this season. The “Game of the Week” package begins this Saturday with the Charleston Southern at Monmouth conference season opener from West Long Branch, N.J. at 1:00pm. MATT HARMON (play-by-play) and TODDERICK HUNT (analyst) have the call from Kessler Field. The package features a “Wildcard” selection for the second straight year, which will be the weekend of Nov. 19. That selection will be made 14-21 days in advance. TIPPING THE SCALES For the fourth consecutive week, the Big South will go head-to-head against a nationally-ranked nonconference opponent when Liberty hosts No. 3/4 Jacksonville State Saturday night. It is the league’s longest such regular-season string against nationally-ranked non-league foes since 2012, when the Big South faced a ranked opponent the first five weeks of the season. KHALIL’S GOT THE WILL Gardner-Webb RB KHALIL LEWIS leads the Big South with 327 rushing yards, 109.0 rushing yards per game and five touchdowns. If he can maintain his current season production, Lewis has a chance to become the first Runnin’ Bulldog EVER to lead the Big South in any of those three rushing categories. His 327 rushing yards through the first three games of the season are the most by a GWU rusher during Gardner-Webb’s tenure in the conference (since 2002).

BLOCK-N-BASILE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE already has three blocked kicks this year, tied for second-most in a single-season in Big South history. The record is four, set by Presbyterian’s CHETYUANE REEDER in 2008 and tied by Coastal Carolina’s MARCUS WILLIAMSON last season. Basile now has four career blocked kicks, which is tied for third all-time in league annals. He is one away from moving into a tie for second. Former PC defensive standout and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL is the Big South career leader with nine blocked kicks. RUSH CHAIRMEN Gardner-Webb is the only Big South member to rush for more than 200 yards in each of the first three games this season, which is also the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ first such streak to open a season as Big South members (since 2002). The last time GWU rushed for 200 yards in three consecutive games was in 2002 when the squad spun off six straight 200 rushing games from Sept. 21 to Nov. 9. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb is second in the league with 272.3 per game -- just 16.7 yards behind leader Kennesaw State, and could challenge for its first-ever Big South team rushing title. BROCK AND ROLL Presbyterian College QB WILL BROCK passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in PC’s 31-14 win at Campbell this past Saturday. He is the first Blue Hose quarterback with a multi-TD pass game since 2014, and is the first PC signal-caller with two TD strikes and a rushing scorer in a contest since 2013. HOME SWEET HOME Big South teams are 2-2 in home openers thus far, and Monmouth and Presbyterian finally open their respective home slates this week. Below is a look at the last home-opening win and current homeopening streaks for both squads. Team Monmouth Presbyterian

2016 Big South Football RANK AND FILE With Charleston Southern’s appearance in the national polls this week, the Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 68 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 season (Oct. 24). The Buccaneers are ranked No. 11 in the FCS Coaches poll, No. 12in the STATS ranking, and No. 9 in the Hero Sports Media poll. ROAD TRIPPIN’ Monmouth and Presbyterian each opened the season with three consecutive road games, marking just the sixth and seventh time overall that a Big South member opened a campaign with three straight away games. Charleston Southern was the last league team to do so in 2011, as the Bucs have opened with three straight road games three times (2008, 2009, 2011). Liberty was the first Big South team to open a season with three consecutive road games in 2003, while PC did so in 2010. MAXWELL HOUSE Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is now fifth all-time in Big South history among quarterbacks with 1,317 rushing yards. He needs 63 to move past MIKE BROWN (Liberty) for fourth-place. Maxwell is also one rushing score shy of becoming the 14th Big South signal-caller with 10 career rushing TDs. Meanwhile, Maxwell rushed for 154 yards and passed for 102 at Elon in Week 1, becoming the first quarterback in Big South history with three career 100-yard rush / 100-yard pass games. He shared the previous record of two such efforts with seven other quarterbacks -- including current Kennesaw State QB TREY WHITE. MOVING THE CHAINS Monmouth RB LAVON CHANEY is tied for second all-time in Big South history for receptions by a running back with 75 -- just three away from breaking the record of 77 held by DE’ANGELO HENDERSON. Chaney’s 609 career receiving yards out of the backfield are also second-most among Big South running backs, and 122 away from Henderson’s record of 731. Meanwhile, Chaney has thrown for three touchdowns during his time in the Big South, tied with former Liberty WR ADRIAN HALL for the most TD passes by a non-quarterback. EXCEPTIONAL ESTES Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior TE MIKE ESTES tied the Big South record for career receptions by a tight end this past Saturday, as he now shares the all-time mark of 90 catches with former teammate SETH CRANFILL. Estes is already the league’s career leader for receiving yards by a tight end with 1,133, and is tied for the top spot among tight ends with eight career touchdown receptions. HAMMING IT UP Charleston Southern’s DARIUS HAMMOND is second in Big South history with 556 career punt return yards, and is 78 away from breaking the league’s all-time record of 633 currently held by Coastal Carolina’s NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO. Hammond is also on pace to become the Big South’s all-time leader in combined kick return yards. He is currently fourth with 2,209 and is 516 yards away from breaking the record of 2,724 held by Gardner-Webb’s J.J. HUBBARD. Meanwhile, Hammond is 708 yards shy from becoming just the eighth player in conference annals with 4,000 career all-purpose yards.

2,000-YARD RUSHING ODYSSEY Charleston Southern RB MIKE HOLLOWAY is 64 rushing yards away from becoming the 20th player in Big South history with 2,000 career rushing yards. He is the Big South’s active career rushing leader with 1,936, ahead of Monmouth’s LAVON CHANEY (1,806). Presbyterian’s DARRELL BRIDGES is next at 1,748. Holloway would become the second Buccaneer on the Big South’s 2,000-yard rushing list, as would Bridges in regards to Presbyterian. Chaney would be Monmouth’s first entry among the conference’s career 2,000-yard rushers. GEE-WIZ Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER, who opened the 2016 season as one of 34 FCS players named to the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List, is 41 tackles away from becoming the 14th player with 300 career tackles, and would be the fifth linebacker on the all-time list. Geter has accumulated 154 solo tackles and needs four to enter the league’s Top 10 in that category. Meanwhile, Geter has amassed 29.5 career tackles-for-loss as well as 10.5 sacks. He needs 8.5 TFL to match the Big South career TFL record among linebackers (38.0 - MARTY PATTERSON, Gardner-Webb), and 3.5 sacks to equal the linebacker sack record of 14.0, which is held by MAURICE SIMPKINS (Coastal Carolina, 2003-05). THREE’S COMPANY Charleston Southern will have three active players with 1,000 career rushing yards when DARIUS HAMMOND reaches the milestone this season. Hammond needs just seven yards to join MIKE HOLLOWAY (1,936) and BEN ROBINSON (1,264) in the club. The three players have rushed for a combined 4,193 yards and 41 touchdowns on 660 carries -- a combined average of 6.35 yards per carry.
Sept. 19 - Weekly Report 2016 Big South Football • 5
2016 Big South Football MAGIC MIKE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE has recorded at least 10 tackles in 11 of his last 15 appearances, and already has 230 career stops through 25 career games. His current career average of 9.20 tackles per game ranks fifth all-time in Big South history. Basile owns 152 career solo hits and is six away from entering the Big South’s Top 10 in that category. In 2015, Basile became just the third defensive back to lead the Big South in total tackles and tackles per game in a season as he finished with 119 and 10.8 per game, respectively, and he leads the conference after three games this year. He is looking to become just the third player in Big South annals to lead the league in tackles in back-to-back years. WHITE-WASHING Kennesaw State QB TREY WHITE became the ninth quarterback in Big South history to surpass 1,000 career rushing yards, as he eclipsed the milestone against East Tennessee State in Week 1. White sits ninth all-time with 1,032 career yards and needs 151 to move into the eighth spot. White added a rushing TD in the opener to become the 13th Big South signal-caller with 10 career rushing touchdowns. SEA SHELLS Liberty WR DANTE’ SHELLS has 82 career receptions for 1,503 career yards. He is 18 catches away from joining the Big South’s 100-reception club and 497 yards away from 2,000. Shells would become the 13th player with both career milestones once he reaches each total. TOP CHEF Gardner-Webb linebacker AARON COOK eclipsed 200 career tackles at Western Carolina in Week 2. He owns 8.0 career sacks, and is two away from becoming the fifth linebacker with double-digit sack totals. Meanwhile, Liberty LB NICK NEWMAN is nine stops shy of the 200 career tackle milestone. PORTRESS OF SOLITUDE Kennesaw State DE TONARIUS PORTRESS tied the Big South single-game record for tackles-for-loss when he registered 5.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage against East Tennessee State in Week 1. The previous player with this distinction was Presbyterian’s UGONNA AKOH vs. Gardner-Webb on Nov. 23, 2013. Portress is now the seventh player in Big South history with 5.0 TFL in a game -- but just the second to achieve the feat in a season opener. GOOD WORK YOUNG MAN The Big South Conference is once again represented among the national candidates for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Liberty’s DEXTER ROBBINS is among the 165 candidates from every subdivision and classification. Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER was a 2015 nominee. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 125, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Charleston Southern at 49. In addition, Liberty is the Big South’s record holder for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 69. Meanwhile, Liberty has scored a point in all 68 of its Big South games, the longest such streak in league annals. Of those 68 games, the last 56 have been in double digits. Charleston Southern’s current streak of 42 conference games with a point scored is third-longest all-time, just ahead of PC’s active streak of 40 games. REG-GIE, REG-GIE Monmouth WR REGGIE WHITE JR. recorded career-highs of 11 receptions and 129 yards at Delaware State in Week 2. He is the second Monmouth Hawk with a 10-reception game since MU joined the Big South in 2014, as former wideout and current Jacksonville Jaguar NEAL STERLING hauled in 11 passes at Lehigh on Sept. 27, 2014. BLOCK PARTY Monmouth blocked a Big South single-game record four kicks at Delaware State in Week 2, with MIKE BASILE recording two of the deflections. The Hawks blocked two punts, one field goal and one PAT attempt to break the old league record of three set by VMI in 2004 and matched by Gardner-Webb in 2009. Basile was responsible for the FG and PAT blocks, and is the first Big South player with two blocked kicks in a game since Liberty’s FRANCIS BAH in 2012. BIG SOUTH OFF TO ANOTHER SOLID START AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FCS FOES While the Big South is 5-5 after 10 games against non-conference FCS opponents, three losses have been by seven points or less with two in overtime. Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the Big South is 57-27 ( =67.9 winning percentage) in regular-season competition and 62-32 ( =66.0) when including postseason games in that span. The Big South has posted at least a 60.0 winning clip in each of the previous three seasons.
