SCSU COACH SCOTT UNDERWOOD: Scott Underwood is in his ninth season as the head coach at St. Cloud State in 2016. Underwood is the 12th head football coach in the history of Husky football. Prior to being named the St. Cloud State head coach, Underwood had been the defensive coordinator for the Huskies since 2001. In nine seasons at the helm of the Husky football program, Underwood has compiled a 6532 overall record. His win total is the second-most all-time at SCSU. He has placed SCSU among the nation’s elite NCAA Division II programs with NCAA tournament appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The program brings back All-NSIC First Team selections Jaden Huff (RB), Jameson Parsons (WR), Craig Szymanski (LB) and Brady Westart (LB). All-NSIC Second Team award winners in 2015 who are back this fall include Bryce Johnson (OL), Mitch Knutson (DL) and Richardo Ramos (DL). All-NSIC Honorable Award winners back from 2015 are Jerry Duckworth (DB), Adam Josephson (LB), Grant Lewis (OL), and Nate Meyer (QB) The team returns two-year starting quarterback Nate Meyer Meyer threw for 2,851 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. He became just the fifth quarterback in school history to throw more than 20 touchdowns in a season. His consecutive seasons of over 2,000 yards passing the last two years made him just the sixth quarterback in school history to accomplish the feat in back-to-back seasons. The team also returns leading receiver Jameson Parsons, who caught 61 passes for 1,272 and nine touchdowns as a junior. Parsons became just the fifth receiver in the school record books with a 1,000 yard receving season as a junior. The squad’s leading returning rusher is Jaden Huff, who ran for 741 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore. On defense, linebacker Brady Westart paced the team with his 79 tackles and racked up 10.5 stops for loss plus 7.5 sacks. Adam Josephson was steady on defense with his 71 tackles with fellow linebacker Craig Szymanski tallying a team-high 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. In 2015, SCSU charted 2,361 yards on the ground, while limiting opponents to 1,594 yards. In the air, SCSU gained 2,880 yards passing (194-318-12) and allowed 2,570 yards (202-350-9). The Huskies were able to outscore their opponents by a 389-255 margin including 238-113 in the second and fourth quarters. The team brings back a total of 13 starters (six offense and seven defense) this season along with a total of 29 letterwinners, plus adds in 39 newcomers to the mix.

Wayne State has been outscored this season by a 106-55 margin. Trimble is the team’s leading rusher on the season with his 180 yards on 38 carries. Stuart Hamann led the team with his nine tackles and also had an interception. The SCSU defense forced five turnovers in the game against the Peacocks. The five turnovers were the most for the program since the 2013 season when the program forced six turnovers (five interceptions and a fumble) against Northern State (10/26/13) The last game when exactly five turnovers were forced came against Augustana (9/28/13). The last time SCSU had three or more interceptions in a game was against MSU Moorhead (10/31/15) when the Dragons were picked off four times. The Huskies were able to control the ball for the second straight week for more than 36 minutes (36:41). Four players made their first career start against the Peacocks in Parker Mathewson - RG, Anthony Carver - TE, Jake Schley - NG and Jack Horter - LB. Craig Szymanski played and started at defensive end for the first time as SCSU went with a smaller defensive line to combat the spread offense of UIU.

The program ranked sixth nationally in the category • The team ranked second in the NSIC and among the top 20 nationally in several categories including fewest penalities (56 - 16th), fewest penalty yards per game (5.09 - 15th), fewest penalty yards (429 - 10th), fewest penalty yards per game (39.00 - 9th) passing yards per completion (14.85 - 17th) and total offense (476.5- 17th). • The program also placed in the top five in the NSIC in third down conversion percentage (.493 - 3rd), rushing offense (214.6 - 3rd), sacks allowed (1.36 - 3rd), completion percentage (61.0 - 4th), red zone offense (84.6 - 4th), scoring offense (35.4 - 4th), sacks (2.27 - 4th), first downs allowed (202 - 4th), fourth down conversion percentage (55.6 - 4th) and punt return defense (8.55 - 5th). • The team held three opponents below 100 yards rushing in a game including a season low 67 yards to the University of Mary. • The squad recorded seven games of 200 or more yards rushing including a season-high of 368 against Minot State • The team also had five games of over 250 yards passing including 424 yards in the air against Minnesota Duluth. His 115.6 receiving yards per game placed him fifth nationally. • Parsons also placed third in yards per reception (20.85), fourth in the league in receiving touchdowns (9), fifth in all-purpose yards (117.82) and sixth in receptions per game (5.5). • He became just the fifth player in school history to total 1,000 or more receiving yards in a season. • Overall, it is just the sixth time that mark has been reached. Meyer became just the fourth different SCSU player to throw for over 20 touchdowns in a season along with Keith Heckendorf, Phillip Klaphake and Daniel Kaczor and it was just the eighth time the feat had been accomplished overall. Meyer’s 2,851 yards passing was the fourth-highest single season total in school history while his 190 completions were the fifth-most in the record books. His 2,851 yards passing in 2015 and 2,051 yards passing as a sophomore makes him just the sixth player in school history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in back-to-back campaigns. Meyer’s average of 9.1 yards per pass tied him for the fourth-best in school history in a single season. Meyer’s passing yard average of 259.2 per game ranked second in the school single season record book. Four Huskies posted 100-yard rushing games on the season. Running back Curtwan Evans and quarterback Nate Meyer each had one 100-yard game. Running back Jaden Huff topped 100 yards twice and running back Ledell White totaled three games of over 100 yards rushing. Three SCSU players recorded 100-yard receving games. Wide receiver Matt Hentges had one, tight end Grant Thayer recorded two and wide receiver Jameson Parsons had seven 100 yard games.

Other 2015 Notables • Jameson Parsons had 26 20-plus yard receptions during the 2015 season and 49 of his 61 catches resulted in either a first down or touchdown for SCSU. • James Williams led the team with 10 special teams stops. • Craig Szymanski recorded at least half a tackle for loss in all but two games on the season. • Jaden Huff reached 1,000 career rushing yards last year and has rumbled for 1,165 rushing yards in his career. • Derek Witte hit a career-long 28-yard field goal against Northern State (11/7/15) • Nate Meyer’s 33 completions against Minnesota Duluth (10/10/15) are the second-most in school history for a single game, while his 53 attempts were the fourth-most Up Next • The Huskies are on the road again next weekend and travel to Crookston, Minn. to take on Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at Edwiseth Field. • SCSU is 12-0 against Minnesota Crookton in a series that started in 2003 with the Huskies winning 66-7. • The last meeting between the schools was last year with SCSU coming away with the 62-14 victory in St. Cloud. • The last meeting in Crookston was during the 2014 season with the Huskies earning the 45-24 victory.
