Players of the Week Attacking Player of the Week - KELSEY PERRELL, High Point, Forward, R-Senior, King, N.C. Perrell scored both of High Point’s goals in a key 2-1 victory over Liberty to begin conference play on Saturday. The redshirt-senior opened the scoring in the 16th minute to give the hosts a quick 1-0 lead. The forward scored the eventual game-winner at the start of the second half to propel HPU to victory. Defensive Player of the Week - LIZ AMANDA BROWN, Charleston Southern, Goalkeeper, Junior, Coral Springs, Fla. Brown posted a clean sheet to begin conference play, as she made six saves in Charleston Southern’s 1-0 win over UNC Asheville on Saturday. The junior saw 14 shots for the match and totaled her fourth shutout on the year, which leads the conference. Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week - ALEXA GENAS, Campbell, Forward, Freshman, Albuquerque, N.M. Genas scored twice on both of her shots in Campbell’s 6-2 triumph over Presbyterian College to open conference play on Saturday. Both of her goals came in the first six minutes of the match to give the Fighting Camels a quick two-goal advantage.

2016 Big South Women’s Soccer Team-By-Team Notes

2016 Preseason Poll

Campbell opened up Big South play with a decisive win over Presbyterian, 6-2. The scoring came early for CU as freshman forward ALEXA GENAS connected on two goals within the first six minutes of play. Senior defender MURITA STOREY and junior midfielder SHELBY DENKERT each connected on their first goals of the season to lift CU to a 4-2 lead at the half. Senior midfielder KINE THORSVIK and sophomore forward SHANNON WRATCHFORD added goals for Campbell in the second frame to solidify the victory.

Defending women’s soccer champion Liberty University has been voted the preseason favorite in the Big South Conference women’s soccer preseason poll by the league’s head coaches. Below are the poll results with total points received, including first place votes in parentheses:

CAMPBELL

KELLY HINKLE scored the game-winning goal as Charleston Southern topped UNC Asheville, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field in their first conference game of the season. Hinkle scored in the 62nd minute for her second goal of the season, giving CSU a lead the Bucs would not relinquish in the victory. KELSEY FITZHUGH, JORDAN NEWMAN and ANNA SELLS also had shots on goal and added pressure on the Bulldogs’ defense in a physical game that consisted of 19 total fouls. Defensively in the net, LIZ AMANDA BROWN recorded her fourth shutout of the season (4-0), with a total of seven saves for the match.

GARDNER-WEBB Gardner-Webb dropped its conference opener to Longwood on Saturday in its lone match of last week.

HIGH POINT KELSEY PERRELL recorded a brace to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Liberty in the team’s conference opener on Saturday. Perrell scored a goal in each half, her fourth and fifth of the season, as High Point improved to 5-4-1 on the season. In the first half, Perrell controlled a back pass and took shot from 25 yards out that caught the Liberty keeper off her line. She then doubled the HPU lead after halftime, receiving a ball with her back to goal and pivoting before slotting a shot into the bottom right corner.

Liberty opened conference action at High Point on Saturday, dropping the contest, 2-1. Devon Jones posted the lone goal for Liberty, marking the second consecutive year the forward has recorded her first goal of the season in a conference opener. Liberty’s loss in a Big South opener is its first since the 2010 season, when the Lady Flames lost at Charleston Aug. 29 Southern, 3-2, on Oct. 2, 2010. UNC ASHEVILLE The Bulldogs dropped their conference opener on Saturday to Charleston Southern, 1-0.

WINTHROP Freshman GRETA CONBOY came off the bench vs. Radford to score her third goal of the season, which ranks 2nd on the team. The Eagles are led offensively by two freshman as KEELEY LEISING leads the team with four goals (8 pts). Leising is halfway to breaking into the school’s top 10 for goals in a single-season.
