2017 William Paterson Baseball Head Coach Mike Lauterhahn The 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Coach of the Year, former William Paterson standout Mike Lauterhahn carried a 194-155-3 record into his 10th season as his alma mater’s head coach in 2017. During his first year at the helm of the William Paterson program, the Pioneers were 23-19 overall and earned their first postseason victory since 2004, defeating host Montclair State 8-6 in the opening game of the 2008 NJAC Tournament. Three of his players earned selections to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State Team, including Mike Guadango, a first-team all-conference and second-team all-America honoree. In 2009, Lauterhahn led the Pioneers to a 24-17 overall record and a 12-6 mark in NJAC play, as William Paterson reached the final of the conference tournament. Seven of his charges earned all-NJAC laurels, including three first-team honorees, and Guadango was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Team for the second straight year (third team). In 2010, the Pioneers battled through injuries to compile a 16-21-1 overall mark, led by junior lefty pitcher Brett Carroll, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. In 2011, the Pioneers bounced back to finish with a 20-17-1 record, and had six players named to the NJCBA Division II/III All-State Team. William Paterson, led by ABCA and D3baseball. com all-American Adam Derner, was 29-13 overall, reaching the second round of the 2012 NJAC Tournament. A year later, the Pioneers registered a 27-win season and earned the second seed for the NJAC Tournament. The NJAC Fireman of the Year, Frankie Colasante, led a list of seven all-league selections. In 2014, WP earned its third straight NJAC Tournament bid while Trevor Haughney was a second-team all-region honoree, and in 2016 the Pioneers reached the third round of the NJAC Tournament. William Paterson collected five all-conference laurels, including NJAC Co-Pitcher of the Year Mitch D’Amato and second-team all-league outfielder Mike Abate, who was one of nine players nationally to be named to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Lauterhahn served as the varsity head coach at Rutherford High School (2001-07), leading the Bulldogs to a 129-55-1 record during his seven seasons, the 2004 and 2005 Group 2 state titles, and Group 2 runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2003.. Lauterhahn’s connection to the Pioneer program stretches back more than three decades, as his father, Bob, is in his 37th season as an assistant coach, and his brother, Dan (1995-97), was an all-American at the school and a 1997 draft selection of the Detroit Tigers. An all-NJAC outfielder for the Pioneers after transferring from Rutgers-Newark, Lauterhahn helped lead William Paterson to a 56-24 two-year record (1993-94), the 1993 NJAC title and a berth in that year’s NCAA Tournament. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1994, he spent two years in the Cubs’ farm system before returning to William Paterson to finish his studies.
Last Time Out William Paterson (15-19-2, 8-10 NJAC) fought its way into the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament with an 8-6, 4-3 Senior Day sweep of Rowan (26-14, 10-8 NJAC) April 29. Game One Two runs during the home half of the eighth gave the Pioneers the edge in a back-and-forth opener, 8-6. WP crossed the plate first as senior catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) walked, senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) singled through the right side and freshman third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./ Hawthorne) doubled to right for a 1-0 game after two innings. The Profs evened the score during the top of the third, thanks to a leadoff base on balls, balk, single and run-scoring ground-ball double play. William Paterson answered in the bottom of the third when junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) dropped a two-out base hit into left center and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) followed with an RBIdouble that split the gap in left-center field, making it a 2-1 margin. Rowan struck for two fourth-inning scores via a two-run triple by sophomore shortstop Matt Edwards, pushing the Profs ahead by a 3-2 count. WP again leveled the score, this time at 3-3 in the home half off the fourth with a Perez fielder’s choice and stolen base, a groundout by freshman right fielder Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and a double inside the left-field line by junior second baseman Bernard Brito (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn). The Profs jumped ahead by a 6-3 count during the top of the fifth inning, helped in large part by three Pioneer errors as well as a base on balls and a single. Back-to-back walks for Rowe and Perez started the bottom of the sixth, and an error on a sacrifice attempt allowed Rowe to touch home. Brito then plated Perez with a groundout and the Pioneers trailed, 6-5. William Paterson tied the score during the home half of the seventh. Hoagland opened the frame with a double to left center and Colón singled through the right side before Knauf put down a bunt that was thrown home, but not in time to beat a streaking Hoagland. The Pioneers went ahead for good in the eighth. An error put the leadoff hitter, freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), aboard and freshman designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrificed him to second. Hoagland sent a ground ball through the right side of the infield and Colón walked to load the bases. Knauf singled in Ferrara, and Rowe lifted a fly ball to the warning track in center for a sac fly, pushing WP ahead by an 8-6 count. Hoagland was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, while Colón and Rowe each contributed a pair of hits. Knauf and Brito tallied two RBI apiece. Sophomore Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) covered the first 5.0 innings, giving up six runs (three earned), five hits and four walks while striking out two. Junior Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) earned the victory with 3.1 scoreless
2017 William Paterson Baseball innings, scattering three hits while posting one strikeout (3-1). Senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) earned his seventh save by recording the final two outs, one on strikes. Edwards was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored for Rowan. Senior reliever Rob Grilli suffered the loss with two runs (one earned), two hits and one walk allowed in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Game Two The Pioneers rallied for four unanswered runs and a 4-3 closing victory. Three base hits allowed Rowan to post one run in the top of the second, and a walk, sacrifice, balk and single made it a 2-0 score in the sixth. The Profs extended their lead to 3-0 during the top of the seventh inning, thanks to a hit by pitch, groundout and Alex Kokos base hit to right field. WP got two runs back during the bottom half of the seventh. Junior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) deposited a base hit into right, Hoagland singled to right center and Colón drove in both runners with a double to left-center field. Breun started the home half of the eighth by reaching first thanks to an error, but Brito’s bunt was thrown to second to get the lead runner. Ferrara doubled down the left-field line, and the mishandled ball in the corner was enough to allow Brito to score from third base and tie the game at 3-3. Another error, this one off a batted ball from Solodkin, plated Ferrara for the go-ahead run. Colasante entered for the top of the ninth and sat down the Profs in order, two by strikeout, for his second save of the day and eighth save of the season. Colón finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double, while Ferrara was 2-for-4, hit a double and scored a run. Junior starter Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) allowed three runs, nine hits and two walks, striking out one during the first 6.2 innings. Junior Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) retired all four batters he faced (3-4) before Colasante entered to close out the win. Sophomore third baseman Dillon Mendel went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Rowan. Sophomore Eric Shugars went 7.2 innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits while registering one strikeout (3-4).
Regular Season vs. No. 1 Seed The College of New Jersey Game One EWING, N.J. – A walk-off single sent the William Paterson baseball team (13-18-2, 6-9 NJAC) to a 2-1 loss at No. 16 The College of New Jersey (24-10, 12-3 NJAC) April 27. The Lions capitalized on a leadoff error and Zachary Shindler single up the middle to break the scoreless deadlock during the bottom of the third inning. The Pioneers used a two-out walk issued to freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), a passed ball and a single down the right-field line by senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) to forge a 1-1 tie in the sixth. After two fly balls to start the ninth, TCNJ strung together a single to right center, a walk and a base hit to left center to plate the winning run.

Game Two WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (13-19-2, 6-10 NJAC) surrendered a pair of eighth-inning runs for the fourth and final lead change of the day, allowing No. 16 The College of New Jersey (25-10, 13-3 NJAC) to escape with a 6-5 win April 28. Junior designated hitter Austin Lindsay struck out to start the top of the second inning, but reached base when the pitch got by WP’s catcher. A failed pickoff attempt and sacrifice advanced him to third base, and freshman left fielder Jacob Simon’s groundout to the right side of the infield allowed the Lions to take a 1-0 lead. TCNJ added another score in the third with a double, failed pickoff and attempted first-and-third double steal. The Pioneers leveled the score during the home half of the fourth inning. Junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) opened the frame with a base hit to right and senior first baseman Eriq Colón (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) drilled a double to left. Freshman second baseman Vin Dorio’s (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) ground ball to the first baseman plated Hoagland, and senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) followed with an RBI-single through the right side. Sophomore first baseman Tommy McCarthy tripled to center and scampered home thanks to a wild pitch, handing The College of New Jersey a 3-2 edge in the fifth. WP answered with a two-run bottom of the fifth, stringing together a two-out Lion error, Colón run-scoring double to right center and Dorio RBI-single up the middle. The Pioneers made it a 5-3 game after six with a Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) base hit, Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) fielder’s choice, Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) double into the corner in left and TCNJ error. Simon tripled to the left-center gap to open the top of the seventh inning and McCarthy immediately followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield to cut WP’s advantage to 5-4. A leadoff error, sacrifice, walk, fielder’s choice and base on balls loaded the bags with two outs in the top of the eighth, and McCarthy’s double delivered the tying and go-ahead runs. Colón finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and pair of runs scored. Rowe was 3-for-4 and drove in a run, while Solodkin finished 3-for-4. Sophomore starter Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk over 6.0 innings, striking out three. Junior Mario Danza
2017 William Paterson Baseball (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) tossed 1.0 perfect inning, and freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) faced one batter and was charged with an unearned run. Senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) gave up one unearned run, two hits and a pair of walks with one strikeout during 2.0 innings (0-2). McCarthy went 3-for-4 while collecting a double, triple, three RBI and run scored. Freshman reliever Nick Kleftogiannis received the win in relief with 2.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits (2-0). Junior Matt Curry picked up his seventh save with a perfect ninth frame.
