2018 Vertfest Clinics: 9AM-3PM Intro to Ski Touring Description: This is a good way to learn more about backcountry ski touring. We’ll focus on skinning technique, track setting, and hazard management. We’ll also discuss each of the skill sets that come together to make a successful tour happen, and share time-tested methods of developing each one. Learning Objectives:  Identify the whole range of hazards involved in backcountry ski touring  Understand and apply good skinning technique  Understand the importance of time planning  Recognize the key characteristics of an efficient skin track  Describe the skill sets involved in ski touring and how each one can be developed

Gear List Alpine touring skis, boots, bindings, skins ski poles with powder baskets day pack beacon, shovel, and probe sunglasses and goggles warm layers, waterproof layers lunch Recommended: thermos

Pre-requisites:  Avalanche Awareness or Level 1  Able to move uphill for 2000’ with a pack  Comfortably ski black diamond runs and variable off-piste snow

Start Time and Place: Check-in from 8AM-8:45 at the NWAC tent at Alpental base (see image). Expected Destination: Alpental backcountry
