5th Grade -Take a Look May Mrs. Gaudette/Ms. Pasquale 5-104 and Mrs. Regenbogen 5-101
WRITING
READING The 5th grade will launch their Wonder unit of study where they will engage in a private online blog with one another. Wonder is narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches forever. Students will be exposed to the different point of views of each of the characters as well as several valuable themes related to family, friendship, acceptance, and tolerance for others. All students will be expected to participate in Socratic Seminars based on the text. Students will be expected to read parts of the text at home ONLY when assigned and must be prepared for class on a daily basis in order for this unit to be a success. o This means that the students MUST be prepared with their copy of the novel every day so that they are able to reference the text during our Socratic Seminars. We ask that no child reads ahead because this will impact the discussions we have surrounding the novel. We anticipate rich conversation stemming from the valuable lessons the children will learn while reading Wonder.
The students will be expected to take an extended response question through the writing process based on the novel. We have been working closely with our Extended Response Learning Progression and the children have shown growth since the progression was introduced. Students are working diligently on accurately selfassessing their writing as well as providing feedback to their peers using the various components of the progression.
SOCIAL STUDIES In social studies, the students will continue to explore the geography of Latin America. They will conduct a mini research project in groups in order to understand the physical features and human characteristics of a Latin America country.
MATH Ratio In May, the 5th grade will be working on Ratio during Math. Ratio is a part of the 6th grade Common Core Standards. The students will learn how to compare two quantities by using division and express this comparison as a ratio. The students will also be able to use ratio to express the relationship between two quantities that have the same unit. Students will apply their understanding of ratio to solve real world 1- and 2- step problems. This skill will benefit the children in later grades as well as once they begin using algebra.
