5th Grade May Newsletter 2018 ELA: This month we will complete our nonfiction unit based on the essential question: How do changes to the earth affect the environment and the lives of people? Within the fifth grade we have been conducting group work in which we are reading sample research papers and determining the credibility of citations and sources. Each student has selected an environmental factor to research in order to determine its impact on the lives of people. Various groups will decide which factor/change they believe is the most significant and create presentations for the class. We will conduct a whole class discussion based on the information presented by each group. Each student will write a research paper based on their selected topic in order to demonstrate their knowledge. > CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Math: The NY State Math Exam will be held May 1-2. After the two-day exam, the 5th grade will focus on graphing. Students will be graphing on a coordinate plane and discussing real life uses for this type of graphing. We will also be discussing how patterns can be graphed on the coordinate plane. 5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., xaxis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate). 5.G.A.2 Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation. To help your child at home you can discuss patterns you see in everyday life. Number patterns, visual patterns and patterns in behavior will help them to understand the real world application of our lessons. Social Studies: We will be continuing our study of Mexico and the United States. Students will be synthesizing a new perspective about the relationship that Mexico and the United States had back in the 1800s and comparing it to today. Students will use their knowledge of Primary and Secondary Sources, they will get familiar with looking for voice and for perspective from the Mexican and American sides. Science: We teach our children everything we know in life so that one day they may able to leave the next and explore this great big beautiful world of ours. For the last eight months I have been teaching your kids how to ask and answer questions like a scientist. Like a mother bird flying back and forth to her nest, bringing her offspring worms and insects, I have been coming and going to their groups providing them with ideas and skills. We call this the scientific method. Well at some point the little birdies have to prop themselves up on, fly away and find their own food. The scientific method is them learning to fly. The food they gather is knowledge. This month our students will be in complete control over all that they learn. They will choose a topic, ask a scientific question, and design an experiment to find out answer to their question. They will.... fly into this great big world of science.
