Unit 1: All About God

Devotion: God is spirit. He does not have a body like ours. We cannot see Him. The Bible says, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) We cannot see God with our eyes like we can see many other things. The reason we cannot see Him is that He is a Spirit without a body. He is everywhere, and although we cannot see Him, He can always see us! You might ask “how do I know God is really there if I cannot see Him?” Well, there are many things we know are there even though we can’t see them. For example, the wind is something we cannot see, but we feel it on our skin, we see how it moves the clouds and the leaves, and hear it when it is stormy outside. When we fill up a balloon with air, we can see how the balloon takes on a full shape. Similarly, our lungs take in air and fill up like balloons. We need to breathe air in order to live, and yet air is not something we can see with our own eyes! Just like the wind and air, we know God is in our lives because we feel Him in our hearts, sense HIs presence as we pray, and see the work of His hand in our lives. We do not need to see God to relate to Him. We can read about His actions and intimate relationships with man in the Bible, and hear stories from friends and our elders about how He has impacted their lives. God is more vital in our life than the air we breathe! What other things can you think of that are real but are not seen? (emotions, thoughts, gravity, etc.)

Crafts/Activities: • Fill balloons with air and talk about how the shape of the balloon changes when the air fills it. Play games with the balloons for fun, such as balloon volleyball or relay races. • Blow objects of various weight across the kitchen table. • Breathe in deeply and note how our lungs fill up with air. Talk about how we need the air to breathe and it goes in and out of us even though we can’t see it. Brainstorm evidences of God’s work in your lives as a family. • Fill empty boxes/bags with different objects. The kids cannot see the “invisible objects” but they can know what they are by shaking the bag and listening to the sound or reaching in and feeling. Talk about how we can similarly know the invisible God by listening to His voice, feeling His presence in our hearts, seeing His work in our lives and in the world, etc. 102

Unit 1: All About God

Can you see God? No, I cannot see God, but He always sees me! There are many things in the world that we know exist but that we cannot see. However, people sometimes have a hard time with the idea that God really exists when they cannot see or touch him. By exploring the evidences of God’s presence in the world and in our lives, and by taking a look at some other things that are invisible, we can gain confidence that God exists and that He is always with us. God’s Word, His creation, the works of His hands, His care for and involvement in our lives and the lives of others… these are all evidences of the existence of our awesome God. Sometimes we need special equipment to see things that are difficult to see. We might use a telescope to see large objects that are far, far away in space. We might use binoculars to see the details of a beautiful bird on a nearby tree. We might use a microscope to see organisms too small to see with the naked eye. The special equipment we use to “see” God more clearly is actually the person of the Holy Spirit. He will magnify God in our hearts so that we can see, hear, and know Him more. As the Holy Spirit to help you have confidence in God’s presence in your life and His care for you! Open your eyes and your heart to see what evidences He’ll show you in the coming weeks.
