ADVENT SCRIPTURE SERIES BEGINS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19!

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEKEND St. Dunstan’s annual Thanksgiving food drive will be held this weekend, November 14-15. Proceeds will benefit the food pantry run by our sister parish St. Michael’s in Hartford’s North End. “Third Sunday” volunteers will be present at all the weekend Masses to collect non-perishable food and cash donations (Alternatively, parishioners can bring monetary donations to the altar as a special offering.) St. Michael’s welcomes both nonperishable holiday food and staples such as (healthy) breakfast cereals, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, and canned tuna, vegetables, fruit, and soups. Cash donations will go toward the purchase of turkeys and essential staples, via Foodshare, to be distributed to needy families served by St. Michael’s pantry. (Checks can be made out to Church of St Dunstan.) St. Michael’s food pantry was honored last year by the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Office for Black Catholic Ministries. St. Dunstan continues to be an important source of support in terms of food and monetary donations, and through the volunteer time contributed by both our youth and adult parishioners. The mission of providing food support to struggling families is a vital one, with many of our brothers and sisters at risk of hunger. Many are working families in low-pay or minimum-wage jobs. In fact, nearly half of all SNAP (food stamp) beneficiaries, according to Bread for the World, come from working households. Both St. Michael’s and the St. Vincent de Paul food pantries greatly appreciate the sustained generosity of St. Dunstan’s parish over the course of the year. Your help is particularly critical. Beyond the monthly food drives, there are many ways to support this ministry. Please contact Pete Kennedy at [email protected] to learn more.

St Dunstan’s Advent Scripture Series begins this Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 PM in Father Bannon Hall. Because Thanksgiving is the Thursday before the first Sunday in Advent we will meet one week earlier than usual this year. The new Liturgical Year begins with Advent and we will be exploring the Cycle “C” readings. Please consider attending this special Advent program. There is no better way to prepare spiritually for Christmas. Please bring your Bible but we have extras if you do not have a Bible. We will meet on all the Thursdays of Advent; December 3, 10 and 17 (and maybe on Tuesday the 22nd if enough folks are free). No formal Bible training is necessary and participation is encouraged. The sessions are informal and light refreshments will be served. We begin at 7:00 end promptly at 8:30. For further information call the church office 860-633-3317 or Walter Twachtman, 860633-7837.
