SWA provided detailed landscape master planning services for the 10-km Arabian Canal, including an openspace design for public promenades and plazas directly on the canal and parks and streetscapes within the greater community. Streets are envisioned as “people places” that are part of the park system, rather than merely a transportation system for vehicles. The plan uses unprecedented sustainability technology, including ex tensive microclimate modification. A network of canals, lakes, and wetlands are introduced to the landscape, and engineered topography strategically guides breezes through the development to increase the rate of evaporation, cooling water and air temperatures. Canal streets are shaded to limit direct solar gains, making the space even more inviting for pedestrians.
