Who Are Australian Lutheran World Service? Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) is: ALWS supports development ♦ The overseas development and aid agency of the Lutheran programmes in: Church of Australia. ♦ Papua New Guinea, ♦ Guided and motivated in its work by the example and ♦ Indonesia, commands of Jesus Christ that are expressed in the ♦ Sudan, Gospel message. ♦ Committed to use the generous donations given by ♦ Cambodia, Lutheran communities in Australian and New Zealand to ♦ Mozambique and help the very poor and disadvantaged in overseas ♦ Nepal. countries, no matter what religion or race they are. ♦ They also support refugees ♦ A member of the Lutheran World Service, a very large to resettle in Australia. organisation made up of many Lutheran-based agencies from many different countries. ♦ Over 50 years old. It began in Albury originally to work with Lutheran German refugees who were fleeing from Europe after WWII. They were brought to a migrant centre near Albury in New South Wales.
ALWS is funded by generous donations from Australian and New Zealand Lutherans and also receives funding from the Australian Government’s AusAid programme.
Among others, ALWS aims to: ♦ Address the root causes of human poverty and injustice. ♦ Provide an integrated approach to development assistance so that the holistic needs of people are addressed. ♦ Address the specific needs and human rights of vulnerable groups eg. women, girl-child, disabled, landless, unemployed etc. ♦ Assist in institution building to enhance the capacity of communities to better manage their essential services. ALWS employs three development ♦ Provide for refugees and internally displaced peoples. workers and two part time com♦ Respond to the urgent needs of people affected by munity education staff.
