2011 Season Preview

Neumann University opened the Mirenda Center for Sport, Spiritually and Character Development in the fall of 2009. This serves as the home for the volleyball team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The Mirenda Center also hosts the Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development, the Athletic Department and the integrated fitness center.

The Neumann Knights expect to take another step forward in their goals of winning the CSAC Championship and advancing to the DIII Regionals. Coming from two twenty win seasons and two appearances in the ECAC tournament, the Knights are poised to challenge for the conference championship in 2011.

Also in the fall of 2009, the turf field was opened and is home for the field hockey and the men’s and women’s soccer teams in the fall and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams in the spring. IceWorks Sports Center, 1,000-seat rink, located in Aston (approximately one mile from campus) serves as home for our two varsity ice hockey teams. The Bruder Athletic Fields are located behind the University’s Living and Learning Centers. Two of the fields are home to the baseball and softball teams. The Bruder tennis courts, which are lit, serve as home for the men’s and women’s tennis teams.

FAST FACTS • The Knights reached the CSAC playoffs and the ECAC tournaments the past two seasons, including a trip to the finals in 2010. • Four players were selected All-CSAC • Gary Mitchell was drafted in the MLB 2010 draft. • Affiliations: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC). • Conference: Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). • Home Field: Bruder Baseball Field

Looking to improve on last year’s .313 team batting average, the Knights have improved the off season workout plan and upgraded in some key areas. The offense returns Bobby Callan, Matt Grossi and All Conference players Mathieu Vallieres and Joe Armata. Armata threw out 25% of would be base stealers, while picking off six more from behind the palate. Kevin Flanigan, Brent Tamane and Tim Dougherty all return to the offense. New to the offense is Derek Etsell who comes in from St. Petersburg CC is considered a five-tool guy who is expected to fill the void left by Mitchell’s departure. In 2011, the Knights return all five starting pitchers. Led by staff aces All-Conference Josh Krautwald and Russ Gilliam, the Neumann staff is as strong as ever. Once again the team will count on veterans Matt Compton, Erik Klimoff and Mike Dicken in the late innings. The Knight’s also added 2010 JUCO All-American RHP Matt Smith who comes to Neumann after helping Gloucester CC win the 2010 NJCAA World Series by going 2-0 in World Series action. Neumann begins its 2011 quest February 26 when it travels to Washington College (MD).
