Bring  Back  Gilligan!

Six  months  into  his  mayoralty,Sadiq  Khan  has  yet   to  appoint  a  Cycling  Commissioner.  It  seem  likely   this  post  would  be  combined  with  walking.  Most   infrastructure  projects  started  under  the  previous   Mayor  have  stalled  and  the  Westway  seems  to   have  been  postponed  indefinitely,  apparently  to  be

rerouted.  This  will  be  a  tall  order  in  the  hostile   Royal  Borough  of  Kensington  &  Chelsea.   Having  Signed  for  Cycling  in  the  election   campaign,  we  have  seen  scant  evidence  that  any   substantial  infrastructure  is  being  installed.  We   will  have  to  fight  very  hard  to  sustain  those  scant   improvements  achieved  in  the  last  few  years.   Mr  Gilligan’s  Guardian  column  makes  clear  what   we  should  expect:  http://tinyurl.com/hcgrc25

Whilst  previously  this  was  seen  in  terms  of   casualties,  the  approach  now  is  to  qualify  and

Close  Passes

Camden  Police  are  following  their  West  Midlands   colleagues  lead  and  will  now  prosecute  drivers   who  pass  cyclists  too  closely.  This  intimidating   and  dangerous  behaviour  is  known  to  discourage   cycling  but  there  has  been  a  reluctance  to   prosecute  where  ‘no  contact  has  occurred’.  Repeat   offenders  could  have  their  cars  crushed!  There’s  a   full  report  on  road.cc    on  http://tinyurl.com/h6zfjlr

Autumn  Amble

Geoff  led  a  short  family-‐oriented  ride  to  the  Welsh   Harp  in  the  middle  of  October.

Cycle  counters  on  Royal  College  Street  and   Pancras  Road  have  shown  a  marked  increase  in   cyclists  using  these  roads  since  the  opening  of  the   northern  extension  of  the  tracks  on  Royal  College   Street.  Over  2,000  cyclists  are  now  using  these   every  day!  Jean’s  full  report  on  the  apparent  effect   of  the  new  infrastructure  on  the  numbers  of   cyclists  is  on  http://tinyurl.com/j7xq5w2

Healthy  Streets

Lucy  Saunders  addressed  our  October  meeting   about  how  to  achieve  Healthy  Streets.

Earlier  rain  had  deterred  several  riders  but  the   autumn  colours  were  magnificent  in  the  sunshine.
