DEAR PARENTS/CARERS Thank you to everyone who has supported our fund raising efforts so far this year. Our main charity for 2017-18 South Somerset MIND, which supports both children and adults, has received their first cheque. Monies raised for other charities specifically for children have been donated directly: Children in Need and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Students have been generous and thoughtful whilst also enjoying a wide range of extra activities for fund raising.

Students will be able to buy a ‘memory stone’ to decorate and have it included within the garden.

Headteacher, Mrs Sara Gorrod said “our fundraising does not stop here. We have a number of events planned to continue In honour of much loved and respected Buckler’s Mead Academy raising awareness, keeping Mandy’s memory alive and staff member Mandy Perkins, who sadly passed away in the supporting such an incredible charity.” summer 2017, students and staff at the academy have been raising money for South Somerset Mind, a charity aimed to promote good mental health and wellbeing to encourage greater understanding of mental health issues. On 23 January students, staff and members of Mandy’s family presented a cheque for £1284.06 to David Fields, Community Fundraising Manager for South Somerset MIND. Since September Buckler’s Mead Academy has hosted a variety of fundraising events in memory of Mandy. Events have included a Wear it Bright Day, Soak the Teacher, Welly Wanging, Cake sales, Non-school uniform, Christmas Raffles, Craft Sales, Nail Salon, Tinsel the Teacher, I’m a Student get me out of here (Bush Tucker Trial) and a Charity Christmas Card. Money has also been raised to refurbish the pond area at the academy to create a garden in memory of Mandy. Work will start on this in the near future, with staff and students involved.

Poetry Games Students entered a competition from 'Young writers' with the following brief: Will you write from the heart, reveal a secret or share your thoughts and emotions for Team Truth? Careers South West Twenty students from Buckler’s Mead were selected by Next Steps South West to receive extra careers intervention from Careers South West. These interviews explored the many options open to students after life at Buckler’s Mead. Our students appreciated the opportunity to explore the idea of Higher Apprenticeships and Higher Education and found the interviews informative. Miss Wadham

Year 8 Autobiographies with Liz Pike Leading literary light in Yeovil, Liz Pike, founder of the Literary festival, took time out of her busy schedule to read Year 8 Autobiographies written by High Achieving Students from Buckler's Mead Academy. Liz, a former student, praised the quality of the work and took the trouble to write an appraisal on each one. Liz commented positively on the interesting lives of BMA pupils and that the anecdotes “lifted her”. Miss Wadham, HA Coordinator said, “Buckler's Mead would like to thank Liz for investing her time once again, to enhance the lives and literary prowess of our talented students.”

Phizz Whizzing Words

English Department Pantomime Trip

Buckler’s Mead writers are representing the Academy again in an Anthology entitled “Phizz whizzing words”. Miss Wadham, High Achiever’s co-ordinator explained, “Students were asked to either write in the style of Roald Dahl or write a text in response to Roald Dahl’s work. Over forty students have been selected to be published, once again proving that Buckler’s students are imaginative and creative.”

Over 100 Year 7 students attended the Yeovil Pantomime ‘Cinderella’ at the Octagon on Thursday 14 December. We had arranged a design-a-poster competition in the weeks leading up to the trip, and three lucky winners Chloe Green, Jamie-Leigh Rose and Eli Smith were able to meet and greet with actor Thom Ford who played Dandini, just before the performance.

Breakfast at Bucklers Mead Academy At Buckler’s Mead we know how essential it is that all students have access to a nutritious diet which sets them up for the day. Therefore we are now able to offer our Free School Meal students a complimentary breakfast of toast, cereal, and a hot or cold drink, or a breakfast roll each morning, up to a maximum spend of £1 (this additional allowance can only be used for breakfast). Please note - students are able to spend more than their £1 breakfast allocation, however any extras would need to be funded by the parents/carer. The Free School Meal allowance must not be used to purchase food or drinks for other students. ALL STUDENTS are able to buy a breakfast during the same times – all food is cooked to order and current prices as follows: Breakfast Baps (bacon, sausage, egg or vegetarian) - £1.00 Croissant - £0.70 Toast and Jam - £0.30 Egg or Beans on Toast - £1.00 Cereal & Milk - £0.50 Hot drinks - £0.50 Cold drinks - from £0.30 The Dining Hall is open each morning from 7:30 to 8:15am for students to access their breakfast, hopefully setting them up for the day and talking a little extra pressure off the morning routine at home. Please can we also encourage you to speak to your child/children about the importance of eating a healthy diet. The Academy expects students in receipt of the Free School Meal allowance to purchase a nutritional meal, especially at lunchtime. You can track what is being purchased each day via the Wisepay system. Mr Wood Business Manager

It was a spectacular show, enjoyed by all, with the highlights being Cinderella’s horse and carriage actually flying out towards the audience while ‘snow’ fell from the ceiling of the theatre! Oh yes, it did! Well done to all the Year 7s for their excellent behaviour on the day. Mrs Walls
