COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY INTRAMURAL SPORTS 6-on-6 VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE RULES ALL CSU IM SPORTS PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS ARE EXPECTED TO ADHERE TO AND ABIDE BY THE IM SPORTS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND CAMPUS RECREATION POLICIES.

I.

ELIGIBILITY – WHO CAN PLAY IM’S? a. HAVE CSU PHOTO ID? YOU CAN PLAY! All participants must show their CSU photo ID in order to play every game. This helps to ensure player eligibility. Please visit the RamCard office’s website to learn about replacements for lost or damaged RamCards. b. FULL-TIME CSU STUDENTS (6 or more credits and have paid the rec activity fee as part of their semester tuition) c. PART-TIME CSU STUDENTS who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play d. FACULTY/STAFF who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play e. SPOUSES who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play f. CSU AFFILIATES who have a current Rec Membership – one that is valid during the dates they play g. SPORT CLUB ATHLETES – A maximum of two current club volleyball athletes may appear on any IM 6v6 Volleyball team roster (“current” is defined as one who appears on club team’s roster during that academic year). h. FORMER VARSITY team members whose names do not appear on the current academic year’s NCAA varsity volleyball team roster can participate in this event. Only 1 former college varsity volleyball player may appear on a Recreational volleyball roster. i. CURRENT VARSITY, semi-professional (receiving monetary pay for playing), professional, and Olympic volleyball athletes: Any participant whose name has appeared on a volleyball team roster in the current academic year for any of these types of teams or organizations is ineligible to participate in this event. This includes “red” and “grey” shirts.

GAME LOCATION – All games will be played in the Moby Auxiliary Gym unless otherwise indicated on the online game schedule. c. SEASON & PLAYOFFS – Teams will play a 4-week regular season – 1 game each week – and then teams finishing in their league’s standings according to the table below (who have at least a 2.0 sportsmanship rating average and have not forfeited more than once) will advance to the singleelimination playoffs. d. In order to remain eligible for and advance through each round of the playoffs, teams must finish the regular season with and then maintain in playoffs a minimum 2.0 sportsmanship rating average. **Teams receiving less than a 2.0 sportsmanship rating in any tournament or playoff game will not advance regardless of the result of the contest.** See the IM Policies & Procedures for sp. rating criteria. e. FORFEITS: Game time listed on the schedule is forfeit time, and teams must be checked in and ready to play at their scheduled game time. If, at game time, one team doesn’t have the minimum number of players needed to start the game checked in and ready to play, the captain of the team that is ready to play has the following options: 1. Take the win by forfeit, OR 2. Allow 5 extra minutes for the opposing team to field a minimum required line-up and then start the game. NOTE: If this option is chosen, the result of the contest will stand. i. If a team forfeits twice during the regular season, they may be removed from the league, and will be ineligible for playoffs. ii. Result of a forfeited game will be a score of 2-0 (21-0, 21-0); winning team receives a 3 sp. rating; losing team receives a 1 sp. rating. iii. In order for a team to win by forfeit all checked in players must be legal players (on the roster), or become legal players by the roster addition deadline if they are written in f. DEFAULTS: If a team knows they cannot show up for a contest, they can call or email the IM Sports Office at 970.491.6671 and leave a voicemail to “default” the match by 12:00pm the day of the contest (by 12:00pm Friday for weekend games). A default counts worse than a loss in standings, but does not affect sportsmanship ratings or playoff qualification as severely as a forfeit would. See the IM Policies & Procedures for more on forfeits and defaults. Scores for defaulted games are the same as for forfeited games (see above). III.

GAME RULES: Games will be governed by NFHS (high school) rules, with exceptions/modifications/highlights listed below. a. LINE-UP, ROSTER, & SUBSTITUTIONS i. Maximum of 12 players allowed on a team roster. ii. The game is played 6-on-6. A minimum of 2 players are required to play. 1. COED LINE-UP RULES a. At least 1 man and 1 woman required play. b. When playing with 6 players: 3 women, 3 men. c. When playing with 5 or less players: The difference between the number of men and women on the court cannot be greater than 1. d. There are no positioning or multiple contact restrictions in coed games. Opposing teams’ line-ups do not have to match. iii. All substitutions may be made into any position. All substitutes must make two service rotations before being re-substituted. A player may return to the floor after two service rotations as well. There is no limit to how many substitutes are allowed per game. MATCH FORMAT i. The match will be best 2 of 3 sets, rally scoring. First two sets are played to 21, must win by 2, with a cap of 25. Third set, when necessary, is played to 15, win by 1. ii. Teams are allowed one 30-second time out each set. The captain winning the coin toss will have choice of side or serve. If a third set is necessary, there will be a new coin toss. COURT BOUNDARIES i. A ball touching any part of a boundary line is in. ii. A ball that contacts the ceiling or anything attached to the ceiling before or after directly crossing the net shall result in the attacking team losing the point. iii. A ball that contacts the ceiling or obstacle attached to the ceiling on the attacking team’s side of the net prior to the 3 touches may be played by the attacking team until they use all 3 touches. iv. A ball will be declared out when it: 1. Contacts the ground completely outside of the court boundary line. 2. Makes contact with either antennae or with the net completely outside of the antennae. 3. Does not pass entirely between the antennae. 4. Makes contact with any net support structure. 5. Makes contact with any wall or structure that is not part of the court or attached to the ceiling. 6. Contacts an official or other non-player. YELLOW & RED CARDS i. If a player receives a yellow card, the serve and point will be awarded to the opposing team. ii. If a player receives a red card, that player will be ejected from the match and facility, and may be suspended a minimum of one week from all intramural participation, and the opposing team will be awarded the game. iii. If a team receives a total (or equivalent) of 3 yellow cards during a match, the match will be stopped, and the offended team will win by forfeit. THE SERVE i. Blocking and spiking the serve are illegal. ii. A serve that contacts the net and continues over is a legal serve. BACK ROW PLAYERS – A back row player is allowed freedom in moving about the court but may not jump and attack the ball when the ball is completely above the net, from on or in front of the 10foot line. A back-row player may never block the ball. When playing with a full line-up a team will have three back row players. NET PLAY i. A player may reach under the net as long as it does not interfere with an opponent’s attempt to play the ball. ii. A player can reach over the net to block, as long as it does not interfere with an opponent’s opportunity to play the ball, following their 3 given touches. A player may also reach over the net to complete a spike. iii. Players cannot make contact with the net – the only exception is players’ hair. iv. A player may have his/her hand or foot touching the opponent’s court as long as the following two criteria are met: 1. Some part of that hand or foot is also touching the midline, AND 2. No other part of the body is touching the opponent’s side of the court. i. RULE CLARIFICATIONS i. Players are not permitted to scoop, hold, or throw the ball, and ball must not be allowed to visibly come to rest on any part of a player’s body. ii. The ball must be returned over the net after the 3 rd contact, unless the initial contact made was by an attempted block, in which case the ball must be returned over the net after the 4 th contact. iii. A player cannot make successive contacts of the ball, unless the 1 st contact made was an attempted block or successive contacts occur immediately following a hard driven ball. iv. Players may legally contact the ball with any part of their body. v. There is no libero in intramural volleyball. vi. Snapping the basketball rim before, during, or following any game will result in a 5 point advantage given to the opponent for either that game or the next. IV.

EQUIPMENT: a. JERSEYS WITH NUMBERS – Teammates must wear jerseys or shirts WITH NUMBERS ON AT LEAST ONE SIDE. Taping numbers onto shirts is not allowed. Writing numbers on skin is not allowed. Campus Rec jerseys will be available for checkout from the IM Manager. b. SHOES - All players must wear athletic, close-toe, closed-heel, non-marking shoes. c. GAME BALL – Campus Rec will provide the game ball. Teams must provide practice balls. d. NET HEIGHT – Net height will be 8’ for men’s; 7’8” for coed matches; 7’4” for women’s. e. Hard-brimmed hats and bandanas with knots are not allowed. PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL EQUIPMENT: The serve and a point are awarded to the opponent.

V.

WEATHER UPDATES: In cases of inclement weather, intramural staff may have to cancel contests. DO NOT ASSUME GAMES WILL BE CANCELLED. It is the captain’s responsibility to call the IM office at (970) 491-6671 no more than one hour prior to the contest in question for up-to-date information regarding whether or not games have been called off.
