It’s March—that means March Madness will be upon us before we know it! I know last month I lead off the newsletter with a piece about gambling on the Super Bowl… but the NCAA pushes their ant-gambling agenda during both time periods, so I will too! With that being said, March Madness brackets are likely to be very common in just about every workplace. Generally speaking, you may take part in the bracket fun... HOWEVER, there are certain scenarios in which you cannot. If you’re entering a contest for bragging rights, that is perfectly permissible. An impermissible contest would include A) an entry cost AND B) a prize of some sort (monetary or otherwise). Additionally, a wager of any kind on an individual team to win a single game is prohibited.

EAT TO COMPETE: TIM WIERMAN On Tuesday March 15th at 8pm, Tim Wierman will be in the Atrium speaking with our student-athletes about Nutrition. Tim runs a company called Nutrition Education Services, based in West Chester, PA. Athletics is co-sponsoring this event with Student Affairs as they kick off their Biggest Loser program. He will be covering the following topics: 1. Fuel for the mind & body 2. Pre-competition meal planning 3. Recovery foods; refueling the muscles 4. Fluid replacements 5. How to gain lean body weight; not fat 6. Safe & effective weight loss

Institutional Letter of Intent: If you have a prospective student-athlete to whom you’re not awarding an athletic scholarship, make sure you approach me about getting them to sign an ILI!

I GOT LUCKY: SCOTT MALONEY On Sunday April 3rd at 7pm, Scott Maloney will be coming to our campus to perform his program—I Got Lucky! Scott went to Becker College in Becker, MA. During his time there, he enjoyed many of the things the area had to offer but he found himself partying a lot. One night, Scott locked himself outside of his dorm room after partying all night. Not thinking rationally due to the alcohol in his system, he decided to bypass the RA on duty and try scaling his way up a tree and in the window. Scott fell from that tree and ended up in a coma—doctors telling him he’d never walk again.

He battled his way back and now he is fully functioning, including walking. He travels to schools all over the country talking about making good decisions with alcohol. His program should be very compelling for our student-athletes!

THE OFFICIAL VISIT PROCESS With all of the new coaches coming on board in recent weeks, I think it would be worthwhile to recap the process for Official Visits! In order for us to bring a prospective student-athlete (PSA) on campus for an official visit, we will need him/her to provide all transcripts and register with the NCAA Eligibility Center— your request for a visit will not be entertained without these two things. If the PSA applies to the college, that will satisfy the transcript requirement because I can get the transcripts from Admissions. 48 hours in advance of the visit, I need to receive an itinerary for what you plan the visit to include. Also, if you intend to have the recruit stay overnight, I will need you to fill out the Official Visit Housing Form (available in the athletics mailboxes or upon request) and return it to me with your itinerary 48 hours in advance of the visit. If you turn it in any later than that, I get an ear-full from Housing so I would appreciate it being turned in on time! On the day of the visit, if the PSA will be staying overnight, I need the student host to come to my office and sign the Student Host Form. We can give the host a maximum of $30 to entertain the PSA for the night—just make sure to remind the host that they need to get itemized receipts for everything they do. Throughout the visit, you should be keeping the original itemized receipts for everything you do with the recruit (meals, entertainment, etc.). At the end of the visit, you should total everything up on the Official Visit Coach Form which is turned in to me with a copy of all of the receipts. The original receipts are turned in to Derek with an expense report (which he can go over with you if you do not know how to fill it out) for reimbursement. Lastly, before the recruit leaves, you need them to sign the Official Visit PSA form before they go on their merry way. If you have any questions regarding this process, I’d be happy to meet with you to clear it up!

CACC Peer Review On March 9th, the CACC staff came to our college with an AD and an FAR from 2 other colleges in our conference to conduct a peer review. This procedure is new to our conference and mandates each institution to undergo a peer review at once every 5 years. In fact, we are one of only two conferences in the entire division that holds mandatory, periodical peer reviews. Nevertheless, the team has come and gone with nothing but positive things to say about our department and our institution. Thank you to everyone who was involved for helping to make sure this all went off without a hitch!

New Head XC Coach:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Paperwork We are getting very close to the end of the year, and I am still missing a great deal of practice and recruiting logs from some of you. Many have caught up with me in recent weeks which is great, but the more you stay on top of it the less I have to nag you to get them in!

National Letter of Intent / Institutional Letter of Intent

Andrew Shearer Coach Shearer has officially accepted our offer to become the next Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach at GBC! Andrew comes to us from Middletown High School, which experienced tremendous growth over the course of his tenure. We feel supremely confident that Andrew will bring the same success to Goldey-Beacom this Fall!

The Regular Signing Period for soccer has officially started and runs until August 1st. Please get any and all financial aid requests to me as needed so we can get these offers out. The signing period for everyone else begins in about a month, so make sure we’re on the same page! Our Institutional Letter of Intent has officially received approval from the powers that be! It has no ties to scholarships—it is simply be a way of getting your walk-ons to commit to the institution and for you to reserve a roster spot. Please let me know when you have a PSA you would like to sign an ILI!

Athletic Department Coaches and Staff Meeting On May 10th at 6pm, we will be having a department meeting with all coaches and staff members. During this meeting we will be covering all aspects of the department, welcoming our new coaches, reviewing the 2015-16 academic year, and discussing the upcoming 2016-17 academic year. I will be updating the Compliance Manual for Coaches and Staff for all of you to receive at this meeting. If there is anything in particular that you would like to be clarified in terms of compliance processes and procedures, please reach out to me so I can add it to the list!

New Head VB Coach:

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR COACHES As we advance deeper and deeper into the 21st century, the prevalence of social media in college athletics seems to progress at an incredible rate. Colleges and universities all over the country are finding new ways to market themselves via social media platforms every single day! With that being said, many coaches are also using social media platforms to advance their recruiting efforts and to track the behavior of their student-athletes. However, since the literature surrounding social media is growing at a much slower rate, many athletic departments have yet to define a seamless policy for coaches to follow when using it as a tool for tracking their student-athletes’ behavior. As an example of what I mean by that, some coaches require their student-athletes to “friend” them on Facebook so they can monitor their student-athletes’ posts. If the student-athlete posts a status or an image that is potentially harmful to the institution, the athletic department, or their team, they will ask the student-athlete to take it down. This strategy poses certain issues in terms of liability. If a student-athlete posts an image of them engaging in underage drinking activities and someone reports the photo before the coach sees it, it could lead to assertions of the coach not paying enough attention to their studentathletes… thus ultimately leaving the coach in a very vulnerable spot if any disciplinary action were to stem from the incident. In the coming months, I will be working with other athletics staff to develop a policy for our coaches on this subject. Should you have any suggestions or ideas, I would love to hear your input!

Bob Trinsey Coach Trinsey recently accepted our offer to become the next Head Coach of GBC Women’s Volleyball! Bob has been the head coach of some of the best club volleyball teams in the midAtlantic region, and we have high hopes for him to establish consistency and an expectation for success on the court next Fall! 5
