DRUG REPORTS SPIKE FROM DOB IN A DEALER CAMPAIGN The Ballarat community has taken a clear stand against drugs, with Crime Stoppers Victoria receiving a significant response to the Dob in a Dealer program run across the region earlier this month. The Dob in a Dealer program was launched in Ballarat on 27 April to gather confidential information from the community about the manufacture and distribution of crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs. In the fortnight following the launch of the program in Ballarat, Crime Stoppers recorded a significant 325 per cent increase in community information reports about possible methamphetamine activity in the region. The successful result in Ballarat builds on the information already gathered in the Victorian towns of Bendigo, Wodonga, Shepparton and Moe. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Samantha Hunter thanked the Ballarat community for their assistance and heralded the results as a significant step toward disrupting the supply of drugs into the region. “Drugs like crystal methylamphetamine have devastating consequences for families in regional Victorian towns, placing pressure on police, emergency service workers, drug counsellors and public health specialists,” Ms Hunter said. “The response to the Dob in a Dealer program from local residents has been significant, and the increase in phone and online reports shows how concerned the Ballarat community is about drug activity in the area. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime, and the information gathered over the two weeks of the campaign has been passed on to the police for enquiry. “While the Dob in a Dealer program will now shift focus to other towns across the state, Crime Stoppers is open 365 days a year and we urge the community to continue to report any suspicious behavior they may see or information they may have,” Ms Hunter said. “Making a report to Crime Stoppers is completely confidential. You will never be identified or called up for a court case, but every piece of information you provide can help solve crimes and disrupt supply of illicit drugs into our communities.” The Crime Stoppers Victoria Dob in a Dealer program is funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program and run in collaboration with Victoria Police, and is being rolled out across Victoria to aid in the detection and disruption of drugs being supplied across the state. The program will now continue the fight against drugs across Western Victoria by moving into the towns of Horsham, Portland, Hamilton and Ararat. The Dob in a Dealer program plans to run in a total of seventeen
