ELECTRICAL POWER LINE & CABLE WORKER #PowerLineTechnician #LeadLineWorker #ApprenticeLineWorker #CableSplicer

You have climbed to the top of your trade. Literally. You can be seen scaling the tall power line poles that bring power to industrial facilities. The opposite is also true. Sometimes, you can be found crouched in confined spaces, such as trenches and tunnels, installing power lines, cables and other equipment. During the construction of oil and gas facilities and pipelines, you ensure their significant power requirements are met. Are you charged up to play a part?

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of a provincial three- or four-year lineman/women apprenticeship program is typically required to become a certified tradesperson. A pre-apprenticeship foundation program is another route into apprenticeship training.

What does this career look like? You spend a good deal of time in the outdoors and get to travel to remote parts of the country, sometimes by helicopter, where power generation plants and new facilities are located. You don’t mind heights, which are a mainstay of the job, climbing onto ladders and into hydraulic buckets to work on poles and towers. Picture yourself scaling 80 to 90-foot poles, hanging in leg irons and being handed materials that can weigh up to 150 pounds.

The Red Seal endorsement is the interprovincial standard of excellence, and is available to tradespersons upon successful completion of the Red Seal examination.

Sometimes, you may need to patrol assigned sections of a power line network to identify defects or problems. Troubleshooting and problem solving are a big part of the job. You find and isolate the problem amid a whirlwind of circuit breakers, fuses, transformers and relays.

What would I do? You make power possible. If you’re not stringing a new power line, you’re troubleshooting an existing one. A big part of your job is reading blueprints, also known as ‘one lines’, which are complex diagrams that outline the locations of electrical switches and the areas they power. Another part of your job is safety. You’re exposed to heights and risks of electrical shock, but your strict adherence to safety procedures will ensure you and everyone on your team gets home safely. You work with crew members from other professions, such as electricians, engineers and project managers to construct, maintain and repair the overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems that make up the electrical power grid. As you gain more experience, you find yourself providing advice and recommendations. A certain configuration might make sense on paper, but not in practice… you’re brimming with solutions and workarounds. Other tasks you may be required to do as an Electrical Power Line and Cable Worker include:
