FOLLOW THE HERD For the week of Oct. 1-7 With the fall season reaching its midway point, the Antelopes look to continue their strong play thus far. The men’s and women’s soccer teams host Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday and BYU-Hawaii on Saturday in a couple of key PacWest matchups. The women’s volleyball team will travel to Southern California to take on California Baptist and Azusa Pacific, while the men’s and women’s cross country teams are slated to host their lone meet of the season on Saturday. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country The men’s and women’s cross country teams posted impressive results this past weekend at the UNLV Desert Invitational in Boulder City, Nev. The GCU men took first, while the women were second, in a field that featured conference-foe Dixie State. Brandon Kocmoud finished third overall with a time of 26:31 in the men’s 8k event. The GCU women were led by Kelsi Klotter’s fifth-place finish. She ran a 19:59 over the 5k course. GCU will host its lone meet of the season on Oct. 6 at the Estrella Mountain Regional Park in Goodyear, Ariz. The meet will begin with the men’s race at 8 a.m. The women’s race begins at 8:45 a.m.

Men’s and Women’s Golf The men’s golf squad will be in action today and tomorrow at the Golfweek Fall Division II Invitational in Sunriver, Ore. The men finished fourth last week at the Western Washington Invitational at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, Wash. GCU’s Mark Geddes finished in a tie for second with a 6-under 210. Grand Canyon women’s golf team will return to action when they travel to Bellingham for the Western Washington Invitational from Oct. 8-9. The invitational will be played at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Men’s Soccer The 18th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team had a week to prepare for their first PacWest home game and claimed a 2-1 victory over newcomer Azusa Pacific on Saturday at GCU Soccer Field. The Antelopes were aided by goals from Zoran Nincevic and Brandon Hansen to secure their third consecutive victory. GCU owns a 7-2-0 overall record and a 4-1-0 mark in conference play to stand in third behind Hawai’i Pacific (4-0) and Notre Dame de Namur (4-1-1). The ‘Lopes remain at home for another four games, beginning with a contest against Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. GCU will also host BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

Women’s Soccer The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team opened their five-game homestand with a 1-0 loss to PacWest newcomer Azusa Pacific on Saturday. The game was tightly contested throughout, as the lone score came in the 74th minute. GCU goalkeeper Cat Lena had four saves in the contest. The Antelopes own a 3-4-2 overall record and 2-1-2 mark in PacWest play. GCU will continue their stretch of home games with a matchup against Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday at 8 p.m., followed by a contest against BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball The Antelopes volleyball team’s stay at home was brief. The nation’s 13th-ranked team returned home from a 10-day, 4-match trip to Hawai’i to defeat Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon at Antelope Gymnasium. This week, they are off to California for matches Friday and Saturday with California Baptist and Azusa Pacific. GCU (14-2, 4-2) takes on California Baptist (11-2, 4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. GCU is one and one-half games out of first place. CBU is one of three teams still unbeaten in conference play. Saturday at 5 p.m., the Antelopes have a rematch with Azusa Pacific (11-4, 3-3). They beat APU 3-1 in Phoenix last week.
