FOLLOW THE HERD For the week of Jan. 1-6 The men’s and women’s basketball teams resume Pacific West Conference play this week as they travel to California Baptist tomorrow and Point Loma on Saturday. The wrestling team will host the Grand Canyon University Duels on Saturday in GCU Arena, while the men’s volleyball team will open their 2013 season at Stanford on Friday. Men’s Basketball The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team takes to the road for only its second true road test of the season when they face Cal Baptist tomorrow in Riverside, Calif. The Antelopes defeated UCSD, 65-52, on Nov. 17 in San Diego. GCU was 1-2 in neutral site games played in Anaheim to begin the season. Grand Canyon was 4-7 in road games last season. The ‘Lopes enter the game on an 11-game winning streak and hold a 3-0 PacWest mark. Cal Baptist enters the contest at 7-2 and 1-0 in the league. The Antelopes will stay on the road with a game this Saturday at Point Loma. Both games can be heard via live audio at www.GCULopes.com, with GCU Alum Michael Potter calling all of the action.
Women’s Basketball The 15th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team returns for PacWest Conference play with contests against California Baptist and Point Loma beginning tomorrow. The ‘Lopes will play just their second road contest of the season, although they have participated in five neutral site games thus far. The ‘Lopes went a perfect 11-0 last year in regular season road games and have won 16 consecutive conference road games dating back to the 2010-11 season. GCU has come out victorious in 10 of their last 11 contests and are a perfect 3-0 in the PacWest heading into this week’s matchups. The Lancers sport a 7-2 overall record and 1-0 mark in the conference, while the Sea Lions are 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Fans can follow the action live by visiting www.GCULopes.com.
Wrestling The Grand Canyon University Wrestling team, ranked No. 2 nationally in the Basford Poll and No. 6 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, hosts its biggest event of the season Saturday. The Grand Canyon University Duals at GCU Arena boasts 10 of the best programs in NCAA Division II. Four mats will run simultaneously beginning with first-round action at 9 a.m. The first of four GCU matches begins at 10:45 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Chadron State. Men’s Volleyball Coming off the best season in the program’s history, Grand Canyon’s men’s volleyball squad opens the season Friday at tradition-power Stanford. GCU was 15-17 last season and hosted a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association post season match for the first time. Head coach Jeremy Price was named MIVA Coach of the Year.
