LEAD LINES Who is the most trusting person you know? Now, to be clear, I did not say gullible. That’s not the same thing. Nor is someone who’s just naïve. I’m talking about someone who is able to set aside any native skepticism or distrust of others and be open-hearted toward them and willing to follow them. Maybe you’re thinking of one of your kids or grandkids. They are always willing to trust you as their parent, that you have their best interests at heart and that if they follow you, it will turn out for their best. Or maybe you’re thinking of a coworker. This person is willing to trust the boss in ways that leave you baffled. Yet, it always seems to work out for them. Or you might even be thinking of your grandparents. They lived through some of the hardest times in American history, but they always trusted God in the midst of those times and made it through okay. When we see those in our lives who embody a great deal of trust, it’s inspiring for us. But it’s not just inspiring because of the belief they have in the one they trust, it’s also their will to surrender control of the situation to another and the actions that they take in order to implement what the person says that inspires us as well. As I’ve said elsewhere (and will say again many more times in this series), “Faith is the constant lifestyle orientation of belief in, dependence on, and obedience to God.” Over the next few weeks, we’ll be talking about how the life of Abraham inspires us to live a life of faith. He was the ultimate “man of faith.” In the religious history of the world, no one person has affected more people than Abraham. Three of world’s five great “Global Religions” (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) look to Abraham as a common forefather. But he was not perfect, and even though Abraham trusted God more than just about anyone else who ever lived (except Jesus), God still had to work in Abraham’s life to mature him as a man of faith. So even though 4,000 years have passed, there’s much that we can learn from Abraham’s story. Join us each week in May and June as we learn that what God wants from us more than anything else is faith! Leading as I follow, Casey

REQUESTED ITEMS FOR FOOD PANTRY Chapel Rock’s Food Pantry ministry assists many families in their time of need on the first and third Thursdays of each month, from 5 – 7:30 PM. To supplement the food items received from Gleaner’s Food Bank, Chapel Rock is asked to donate specific items each month. For June, the requested items are personal hygiene items such as, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, denture cream, razors, deodorant, etc. You may bring your donations to the DropZone in the Foyer and place them in the Food Pantry container.

YOUTH BASKETBALL CAMP Basketball in June? That is what you get when the Chapel Rock Youth Basketball Camp opens on June 12, and runs through June 16. This is an instructional camp focused on fundamental skills of the game and fun. Experienced coaches and former players will assist your child in learning the game and improving their skills for the future. An emphasis is placed on the mental approach to the game as well. Halftime talks from coaches and a closing devotion by Coach Fred each day will prepare your child for their future in the game should they choose to play. Sign-ups begin May 1, and will continue through May 31. To sign-up your son or daughter to possibly be the next ‘Larry Bird’ or ‘Tamika Catchings,’ go to www.chapelrock.org/events. On Sunday mornings, paper forms are located at the Information Center in the Foyer. 2

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD DONATIONS Don’t you take your toothbrush for granted? An OCC gift shoebox wouldn’t be complete without one! For the month of June, we are featuring personal items such as bar soap, washcloths, toothbrushes, non-liquid deodorant, rain ponchos, and bandanas. Please pick up several of these items and bring them to the collection bin in the Foyer – just look for the blue and white Drop Zone banner. Just to clarify, we can no longer accept toothpaste as thousands of shoebox gifts have been held up in customs as officers searched for expiration dates. We didn’t receive many socks and underwear in the month of May, so keep those coming, also! God bless you in your giving! The gospel story accompanies each shoebox and reaches thousands of kids each year. If you have questions about Operation Christmas Child, please contact Judy Heuss.
