Today, I will solve equations with three addends.

Vocabulary

Teacher Resources

Adding 3 addends: adding together three numbers in an equation.

7 + 3 + 4 = x (unknown)

Considerations: This lesson represents a skill that is necessary for mastery of 1.OA.2. Students need to understand, the unknown can be represented by any letter or symbol. Students need to be aware there are multiple ways to solve each problem.

10 + 4

Equations can be written vertically or horizontally.

Solve for the unknown:

X = 10 7 3 + 4

10 + 4

= 14

Steps: 1. Pick a strategy to add two of the three addends together. 2. Add the sum of those addends to the third addend. 3. Record the sum of all three and solve for the unknown.

Application of MPs: MP1:

What did you do first? Why?

MP4: How can you relate this to something in real life? MP8: What strategies did you use to help solve the problems?
