Today, I will measure lengths of objects using whole length units.

Vocabulary Whole length unit: any repeated unit that is smaller than the object being measured.

The bandage is about 3 paperclips long. The bandage is about 2 crayons long.

The crayons and paperclips are examples of whole length units because they are smaller than the bandage and are used to measure the length of the bandage.

Teacher Resources Considerations: Consider introducing the purpose of measuring objects and exposing students to measuring with a ruler. To demonstrate whole length units consider using:  paperclips  cubes  beans  buttons  any other object that can be repeated Steps: 1. Measure an object with whole length units (no gaps or overlaps). 2. Count how many whole length units long the object is. Application of MPs:

MP5: What tool will be used? Why? MP6: How can you use math vocabulary in your explanation? MP7: What steps help you solve the problems?

Directions: Measure objects with whole length units.

1. Measure the length of a pencil using paperclips.    

State the objective: Today I will measure lengths of objects using whole length units. Explain that paperclips are an example of whole length units and that they can be used to measure how long a pencil is. Model how to measure a pencil with paperclips (without overlaps or gaps). Count aloud how many paper clips long the pencil is.

2. Measure the length of a crayon with cubes.    

State the objective: Today I will measure lengths of objects using whole length units. Explain that cubes are an example of whole length units and that they can be used to measure how long a crayon is. Model how to measure a crayon with cubes (without overlaps or gaps). Count aloud how many cubes long the crayon is.

Directions: Measure objects with whole length units.

1. Measure the length of a crayon with small paperclips.   

Restate the objective. Direct students to measure a crayon with small paperclips. Count the number of paperclips it took to measure the crayon.

2. Measure the length of a sticky-note with pinto beans.   

Restate the objective. Direct students to measure a sticky-note with pinto beans. Count the number of beans it took to measure the sticky-note.
