Today, I will demonstrate how to bundle groups of 10 to build whole numbers.
Vocabulary
Teacher Resources
Whole number: any number including 0 (e.g., 0, 1, 2, 3, …) base ten blocks (used to represent/draw whole numbers)
hundred
ten
one
Considerations: In 1st grade, students practiced bundling groups of ones into tens. In 2nd grade, this concept is extended to the hundreds. Showing students how to use base ten manipulatives will support their conceptual understanding of this concept. Bundling refers to bringing together groups of ten, and exchanging them for the next place value. This is also known as regrouping. Teacher uses “stick” or “rod” interchangeably when speaking of tens. Also use “squares” and “blocks” interchangeably when speaking of hundreds. Teacher uses “bundle” and “regroup” interchangeably.

HW
1. 12 ones = 1 ten + 2 ones = 12
1. 21 ones = 2 tens + 1 one = 21
1. 4 tens + 3 ones = 43. Yes, the 1. ones needed to be bundled and regrouped to tens.
2. 11 tens + 3 ones = 1 hundred + 2. 22 tens + 9 ones = 2 1 ten + 3 ones = 113
2. 1 hundred + 4 tens + 6 ones
hundreds + 2 tens + 9 ones =
= 146. Yes, the tens needed

to be bundled and

regrouped to hundreds. 3.
4. Caroline did not draw 602 correctly. She drew two tens instead of two ones.

/ *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem. Directions: Bundle groups of 10.
1.
Introduce base ten blocks and explain how groups of 10 make a new unit
10 ones make 1 ten-stick 10 tens sticks make 1 hundred-square
Show this picture and ask, “What number is shown?”
Model how to regroup the ones into tens and ones.
1 ten and 2 ones = 12
