Course Description/Objectives: This course will cover methods of geometric proof, properties of polygons and other geometric figures (i.e. lines, angles, etc.), basic trigonometric functions, and types of geometric transformations as outlined in the Oklahoma Geometry PASS Objectives. Teacher Expectations: Our class time is valuable, so come to every class on time and ready to learn. o Be in assigned seat by the tardy bell—School tardy policy will be enforced! Be respectful of your peers, myself, other teachers, and most importantly, yourself. Complete assignments on time, neatly, and honestly. o No late work will be accepted! o Cheating will NOT be tolerated, and will result in a zero for all involved. No food or drinks in classroom. All electronic devices (phones, iPods, tablets, etc.) are to be put away and not in use during class time. Supplies Needed: 1½” or larger hard-back 3-ring binder Tab dividers (at least 5 tabs) Plenty of loose leaf paper—college ruled is recommended; No Spirals! Pencils and erasers—No Pens! Scientific Calculator (TI-30XS MultiView or comparable) Protractor, Compass, and Ruler (These will be provided in class, but could be useful for completing assignments at home.) Calculators: Calculators will be used on a limited basis and will not be used extensively in this course. Because students will be taking multiple math classes throughout high school, I suggest that they invest in a quality scientific calculator that can be used through the duration of high school and beyond. I recommend the TI-30XS MultiView . The price ranges between $10 and $15, and can be purchased at most Wal-Mart or Staples stores. If you have a more advanced calculator or another type of scientific calculator, you are welcome to bring it. Class Evaluation: As we progress through each chapter, various assessments will be used to measure student progress.
Prime Time Activities: Prime Time Activities (PTAs) will consist of a maximum of 5 short problems, which will be completed within the first 5-10 minutes of class. All problems given in the PTA will either be a review of previous sections or skills relevant to the lesson covered that day. PTAs will be collected every two weeks for a grade. At the end of each quarter, all PTA scores will be averaged together for one quiz grade. Homework: Homework will be assigned as we finish each textbook section, usually consisting of about 20 problems. Due dates for each assignment will be announced as the assignment is given. Students will be given at least two days to complete each assignment, with opportunities to receive assistance in class. I will randomly collect one to two assignments per week, and will grade selected problems. All other assignments will be reviewed in class and will not be
collected for a grade. Once the 20th homework grade is taken, I will only consider the top 19 homework scores for each student. All other homework scores will be dropped. Quizzes: In the weeks that tests are not given, students will be quizzed over two to three sections of material. Quizzes will consist of ten problems each and will be similar to previously assigned homework problems. All quizzes will be announced at least one day in advance during class. Tests: Tests will be given every 2-3 weeks emphasizing the respective chapter and will have a maximum of 25 questions. After the first test, all tests will be cumulative, with the most emphasis to be placed on the specific chapter being tested. Tests will be announced at least two days in advance, and students will be given at least one class period to review for each test and ask any questions. Tests scoring below a 60% will be allowed to be retaken. Both scores will be averaged to compose the final grade. Progress reports will be issued after each test. Notebook: Students will be responsible for maintaining a notebook that contains their PTAs, class notes, all homework assignments, quizzes, and other important documents. A more detailed description of notebook organization will be given in a separate document. At the end of each quarter, notebooks will be graded. The notebook grade will count as one homework grade that will not be dropped. If students are absent for an extracurricular activity, it is their responsibility to collect all assignments missed prior to leaving for the activity. In the case of all other absences, students will need to collect all missed assignments upon their return to school and will be given the number of days missed to complete all assignments. Grading Policy: The school’s grading scale will be used, and grades will be determined using the following weights: 50% Tests 30% Quizzes and Prime Time Activities 20% Homework and Notebook ***An electronic copy of this syllabus and the course calendar will be posted on my faculty webpage on the school website***
