Here’s how to use a meat thermometer to figure out when cooking is done. ______1.

Get potholders. Get thermometer. Get clean potholders and a clean meat thermometer.

Put on potholders. Put the potholders on to your hands.

Open oven. Open the oven door.

______4.

Careful! Pull out pan half way from oven. Using your hands, carefully pull out the oven rack, with the pan of food, half way out of the oven.

______5.

Careful! Put thermometer into food. Using your hand, put the thermometer into the food in this way: 1. Pierce the thickest part of the meat with the thermometer and do not touch any bones. 2. Angle the thermometer on a slant. 3. Poke the thermometer half way down and not all the way through the food to the pan.

Careful! Read temperature. Read the temperature registering on the thermometer gauge. If the gauge registers at the correct temperature (see below for the USDA’s recommendations for meat) or higher, the food is ready to be taken out of the oven because it is done cooking and safe to eat. Decision. Careful! Done. Temperature high enough. Take out pan of food from oven. If the correct temperature or higher registers on the thermometer gauge, carefully take out the pan of food from the oven and put it on to a safe surface.

Repeat steps 2-7 until done cooking. If the correct temperature does not register on the gauge, carefully take out the thermometer from the food. Using the potholders, carefully push the oven rack and pan back inside the oven and close the oven door for further cooking. Take the potholders off of your hands. Using liquid detergent, wash the thermometer tip only (not the gauge). Rinse the thermometer tip in warm water and dry it so that the thermometer is clean and ready for the next use. Repeat steps 2-7 until the food is done cooking. ______8.
